They aren't really idiots, they just hate the fact that people not as educated as they believe themselves to be have the right to speak their minds and do as they please. That's why they love such despots, no matter the "power to the people" and "dictatorship of the proletariat" slogans they spout, what they really want is a Louis XV aristocracy.
The sad thing is they will murder as many millions as it takes to get their silk stocking utopia. What's going to surprise them is their current allies will decapitate them with rusty knives instead of a guillotine. But then they'll be just like Louis XVI....
