Don't they usually just say that they would like to spend more time with their families?

Steve is more of a caviar emptor man, I think.
Thing is Steve is right about this but typically enough for all the wrong reasons. As those of us with tv access learned on CBC tonight, Dave, some Made in Canada items, like packaged fish for gord's sake, travel 25000 kms to get to Canada. Sometimes the Made in Canada sticker is the only Canadian part of the product. That's just nuts - a 4000 Mile Diet.

Harper's a douche, but I think I can get behind him on this one. Consumers can only benefit from better labeling. I was outraged a few years back when Ralph Klein opposed country-of-origin labeling on beef, smack in the middle of a BSE scare. He said nobody cares where their beef comes from. Well, I do. And I also care if my shrimp comes from unsustainable farms in Thailand. Or my salmon from Chile. I want to know if my milk has growth hormones. The list goes on and on...
Yes, Harper's a douche, and this is likely a distraction tactic. I will support him on this, and will vote him out on the next election cycle.

I'm with Alison here, Dave. Strange as it may seem, every once in a rare while the thousand monkeys typing away in the Conservative policy department come up with a good one.
(Does this mean you're back? Huh? Huh?)

Ehn, I'd be one of the consumers interested in seeing the labelling and food origin info on packaging highly improved.
I wouldn't say this is "look over here away from the really egregious shite!" so much as a 'safe' topic well over due and a no-brainer 'everyone will like us' announcement. But it IS important.
It's in line with the study that looked at Canada's food safety in response to the food contamination scares and the increasing awareness that food shapes us more than we think. Our info labels are very vague at present. And yes, "made in Canada/product of Canada" should mean something more than 'we looked at it hard before it was put on the shelves'. I really want those touted improvements and quickly.
That said, I think we should as wary of this important consumer announcement as Every.Other.Announcement that is a 'product of Canada's Gnu Govament'. It's talk. It's one of those 'being accomplished accomplishments'. It's not actually implemented. It sounds like it MIGHT be rushed through and given previous attempts at such rushing without public input, what.could.possibly.go.wrong? And what else might be hidden in it? The Harper government seems very good at hiding bombs in 'feel good' legislation.

A. I'm still away, thus limited posting.
B. This was NOT a prime ministerial subject. It's a regulatory item, (which I agree with), best left to a cabinet minister or a civil servant.
C. Dana nailed it.

Of course Dana is right ... Big Daddy's all about the optics and the lip service. For someone who constantly wanks about "accountability", this government is sadly lacking in any real substance. Colour me soooooooo not surprised.
How are you, sailor?

Sorry... this is a good policy. If farmers - who produce our food, btw - are of the "mouthbreathing" variety, as you so disparagingly call them, then perhaps you should try talking to one or more.
For example... did you know that in Ontario, there are two (2) major egg producers? The small producers might sell eggs to a local IGA market or some such, but there are just two producers of eggs in Ontario.
For over 8 million people... two producers?
That means the bulk of the eggs consumed in Ontario come from... ding ding, you guessed it, the USA.
And guess what? The eggs you all buy at Loblaws all say Canada Grade A... don't they? Think that means it's a Canadian egg?
Nope... just means it was graded here. Nothing more.
Frankly, *I* want to know just where the hell my eggs come from, so I can make a choice to support my local - Canadian - farmers. So should you! Frankly, I take great pride and satisfaction in knowing farmers I can go and see for eggs, veggies, beef, pork, turkey, etc. I can buy, knowing I'm supporting a neighbour, acquaintance, etc.
This is good policy that's long overdue!
