Couple of questions: Do we have a source for the actual resolution? I always like to see how internally contradictory the Tories' little efforts at writing are.
And then, Nicholson repeated that the government is going to amend the Criminal Code to make some provision for aggravated charges. Now, we'll have to see the language (it's my understanding that such provision is already there, although maybe insufficient), but that might be unobjectionable. The question remains, though: would the government support a separate bill brought forward as Epp's was, containing all that disingenuous and contradictory language, simply because such a resolution was passed as the will of the party? Someone has to keep pushing Nicholson.

Protecting Pregnant Women
PROPOSED BY PRINCE ALBERT AND SASKATOON HUMBOLDT
The Conservative Party supports legislation to ensure that individuals who commit violence against a pregnant woman would face additional charges if her unborn child was killed or injured during
the commission of a crime against the mother.

Yes Alison, I can see it now.
Woman attacked...charges may or may not be fitting to the attack.
Woman is pregnant and attacked but there is no harm to the foetus...charges many or may not be fitting to the attack (as above).
But if the foetus is harmed or dies by the attack, then maximum charges for the perpetrator.
For these people, it is not the woman they care about but th ünborn"!.
Can we please get some saneness back to those who will not turn back the clock but work for the here and now.

I think that Nicholson's statement in August was a smokescreen to get out from under Bill C-464 (which was voted for by all conservative MPs save four) before the election they were planning to call.
Mr. Nicholson said the Harper government would move as it promised in August to enact similar legislation to the passed resolution. He repeated earlier Conservative pledges that this was not an effort to attack the right to abort.
Nicholson's statement sounds weaselly to me. If he means to strengthen the current provisions for harsher penalties for aggravated assault, why not say so?
