The Galloping Beaver

Gravatar Very coinkydinky that puff issues like this arise when HM Harper is out of the country. Watupwitdat?

Thanks again for keeping on, keeping the real issues out front and center.

Gravatar PZ Meyers is on the case:

And BTW, some consider Cracker theft very serious:
'To protest student fees for religious services at the University of Central Florida (UCF), a student walked out of a campus Mass on June 29 with the Eucharist. Webster Cook, a student senator, finally returned the Host this past weekend.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue offered the following remarks today:

"For a student to disrupt Mass by taking the Body of Christ hostage'regardless of the alleged nature of his grievance'is beyond hate speech. That is why the UCF administration needs to act swiftly and decisively in seeing that justice is done. All options should be on the table, including expulsion."
It's time for Catholics to stand up for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament!'

Ahh religious people. Remember, they're the ones who designed the Inquisition and burned fellow 'Christians' at the stake for saying the cracker was not magically turned into human meat by the priest as he gave it to the recipient. For them expulsion is a mild chastisement. Be careful Stephen Harper, the Pope used to be head of the Inquisition. He may have the instruments of truth near at hand. Your next Papal visit could be ... interesting.

Gravatar On the other hand, "reap what you sow".

If he wants to run at the head of the Religious Nutbar Party, my sympathy for his accidental invocation of the wrath of other religious nutbars is strictly limited.

Gravatar fat steve is just ticked that they didn't bring out the sacramental mars bars. nom nom nom.

Gravatar You're missing the overall point, and that is everything the PM does is surrounded by lies and spin. We know he pocketed the host. We've all seen the video, and yet the PM's spokesperson has to go into automatic lie mode as usual:

"It's totally absurd," the prime minister's press secretary, Dimitri Soudas, said. "The priest offered the host to the prime minister, the prime minister accepted the host and he consumed it."

"The story today alleges he put it in his pocket and did not consume it which is false. It's totally absurd and ridiculous."

Business as usual.

Gravatar I wouldn't disregard this issue as having no significance to Canadians in general. I don't presume to defend the Catholic Church. I'm one of those miilitant atheists that doesn't give a damn about what happened to the cracker.

That said, this does reflect badly on Harper and the Cons. How hard would it have been to have a protocol officer tell the priest, before the ceremony, "don't offer communion to the PM, he's not a Catholic." Seriously. That's the job of the PM's handlers. Make sure that he passes through social situations without awkwardness or causing offense.

Did no one in the PM's camp know that communion was part of the Catholic mass? Did no one think that the PM - an Evangelical - may not want to take communion? For that matter, didn't the PM realize that he would commit a far less serious gaffe if he just refused the cracker than if he took it like he was being offered a dime and slipped it in his pocket?

The Catholics upset about this are being Catholic. You can hardly fault them for that. But the PM is supposed be representing Canada around the world. If he can't even get out of New Brunswick without making a fool of himself what hope do we have that he'll represent us favourably anywhere else?
