Emerson is definitely a political opportunist and what he did by crossing the floor right after the election is an insult to his constituents.

Oops, hit some wrong key...
Emerson is a globalist, capitalist and typical of the Martinite Liberals. In other words, he is certainly not cut of the same cloth as many of his colleagues who demand an aggressive US brand of neo-conservative approach to world affairs. Nor do I think he supports the social conservative agenda of denying women and gays their rights.
But when you think of it, Bernier and McKay are not so beholden to the Reform extreme ideals but are Harper sycophants and 2nd generation politicians with no real life experience.
So for the predominantly neo-liberal civil servants working for DFAIT, he must be a welcome change for being slightly more progressive and worldly than the other two.

Imagine how different things might have been if Harper had chosen his Foreign Affairs minister on the basis of skill, knowledge and ability in the first place.
That cracked me up. Harper's problem there was like the choice between making the foundation of your new house out of (a) hardboiled eggs, (b) styrofoam peanuts, or (c) soap, because the stone, bricks and concrete had already been put into a really snappy gazebo.
Still, you go into government with the brain cells you have, not the brain cells you wish you had, eh?

The epitaph of more than one short lived government.
