Oh how I long for a return of public debate on other issues dear to conservative hearts. Haven't heard much about slavery or whether women should have the vote for quite some time now.

Do we have a specific law for or against slavery? I've never looked it up.
I know there isn't one about women voting. Some leftard went and included women under the general category of "citizen".

It isn't that drinking a pitcher of hydrochloric acid or licking your tongue on a frozen metal fencepost are lawful in Canada. They are merely not unlawful.
Ooops, there's a whole passel of laws that need to be passed. Pronto.
Excellent, Dave.

I'll never watch or hear Andrew Coyne on the At Issue panel at CBC the same way again.
Perhaps this is just another stake in the heart of a so-called National media, with Coyne leading the charge at the behest of oh let's just say some rightwingnut.
Again, some man blowing a load all over women's rights.
Many people as they become aged become afraid, insecure and desperate. It's a sad spectacle yet understandable. These people are desperate not to be left behind. That they wind up looking like the hind end of an ass is secondary to the euphoria they feel gaining some sort of notoriety and the jolt of striving for relevance. Jawbone of an ass? Sad.
I expected better from Andrew Coyne, and from who pays him. Silly me.

It's funny, some people seem to believe that the law exists for the law's sake, not to protect against particular social ills. I just don't see any terrible consequences coming from the last 20 years of "unregulated" abortion, and therefore any need for a new law.

It's a little strange isn't it? The "deregulation" crowd and "smaller government" choir are the ones calling for more regulation and government in your face.

Dave,
My thoughts exactly. Its almost a fetish with some people, particularly those on the right, to pass laws. In some ways they are even worse than far lefties.
There isn't an artificial problem than cannot be solved with just the right law or regulation.
20 years without an abortion law has worked just fine.
Nice post.

"The "deregulation" crowd and "smaller government" choir are the ones calling for more regulation and government in your face."
In your face and in places a lot more personal.
The truth is, social "conservatives" are some of the biggest nanny statists around. I don't understand how real conservatives can even stomach them, let alone consider them allies.

Danger : Broad sweeping generalization ahead...
Lefties tend to support government regulation in the public sphere re infrastructure and social justice issues but expect gov to stay out of private lives, ie sex, drugs. SoCons are exactly the opposite - keen on having their private lives regulated, meh on social justice issues.

Why would we pass a law about the legality of a medical procedure. I haven't checked but I'm pretty sure there is no law that makes getting a heart bypass legal so why do you need one for abortion.
