I am a sabahan living in West malaysia.
The reason you are not getting used to Sabahan life is that we take everything slowly and at our own pace. The good thing of it is we live peacefully and we don't have a hectic life as in West malaysia. I guess your feeling is just like when I landed my first step in West Malaysia, just opposite.

I am a Sabahan. Thank you for your comments. We need frank obsevations from visitors to the state in order to improve. No place is perfect, least of all us. I shall make known this link to the relevant persons. Of course I have already saved your post, but still, pls don't modify / tone down your post later.

Hey Gina,
After reading your post I guess I will stick to Pulau Redang whenever I miss crystal clear blue seawater, and will stick to whatever seafood that KL has to offer. Heard so many positive reviews about Sabah but I guess that's not my type of place to visit too. Thank you for sharing. GUess I will probably have this place cross out from my list (because my list is endlessly long, anyway), and explore somewhere else, should I have time.
Thank you for sharing once again!

Anon: I guess so. But I think KK is a cool town to retire.. but the living expenses are rather exhorbitant.
Takeshi: We enquired about the steam train but it seems, it was under repair or something. Mount Kinabalu is in Kundasang itself. The road towards the dairy farm is quite tragic.. there were landslides.. I wonder when they will fix it.
CW: I will take pics and show you guys!! Haha
pinolobu: Every place has its flaws. I like KK for its leisurely moments.. but not what it has to offer. Frankly speaking, if Kinabalu mount is not there - Sabah would be unheard of.
greenapple: It is not as bad as it seems. You can still go - but make it a short trip. Sabah has a spectacular mountain view... provided it doesn't rain.

hmmm....i went to kk in late december 2004. i found the place beautiful and peaceful. the pace of life is definately slow there and it would definately take a lot of getting use to as we are all city girls. but its refreshing to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. i think you would have enjoyed it more if you had scale mount kinabalu. my aussie friend loves kk and has called it one of his top 3 destinations in the world. datuk kalimullah also loves sabah mainly because of its people. i guess its different for everyone.

victoria: Yes, KK is not a place for a fast moving girl like me. I prefer everything in a flash. Maybe I just cannot sit still and lay idle.
Visithra: Thanks. I like the pics in your blog too. Awesome!
9393: The BKT is good worr surprisingly. It comes in small bowls, we ordered more and more.. in the end, only costs us RM28.50.

sumandak: My East Malaysian friends ask me not to come to their hometown. LOL.
boytoy: Like I said, probably I had too high expectations on KK. Shud have expected nothing, then I would be less disappointed.
Shine: Thanks. Apa itu CBTL?

Hi Gina, nice pics as usual. Been to Ocean View two trips back, not bad... loved the soft shell crabs there!
Sutera Harbour's food so so only, especially for their buffet. The rooms are very nice though. Some prefer the Magellan wing over the Pacific wing, but both are nice. The spa is damn expensive. Didn't try it while I was there.
East Malaysians generally friendlier (LOL!! I am not saying that because I am also from that island) compared to West Malaysians. If you go about, you will see people smiling more.
Been to Sarawak? :P

Kuching - well, it's a cool place. Much bigger compared to KK. But I find the food is rather bland. When are you going back to hometown again? Probably you can pack me in your suitcase the next time you go!

I'm a Sabahan and living in KL. I love Sabah because my family is there and practically I have lots of childhood memories. The life is too slow for me in KK and I can't stand dealing with the illegal immigrants there plus I'm happy here in KL although the crime rates are much more higher.
I like Sabah much food more because food in KL has too much fat ingredients in it especially Malay food with all the coconut milk. I bet there are less fat people in Sabah than in KL. Heh. I do agree that Sabah food is bland and not much Umph!
I like your honest opinion and your lovely photos and I also love reading Amy Tan.
Regards.

Thanks to Air Asia for the low fare I will be going to Sabah for a week in October. I have been to Sabah 3 times, once to climb Mount Kinabalu although I did not attempt the second day from Laban Rata to the top but I have been up to 11,00 ft feet. This time I will be bring my family and we intend to drive to Sandakan and Kudat and to me if you love nature Sabah cannot be boring; what with Maliau Basin and Danum Valley.

Hi Gina,
Didn't know you were here in KK early this month. I'm sorry to read that your trip to our Land Below the Wind wasn't all that great. But girl, you totally went to all the wrong places to eat and visit. Ocean Seafood!?? Goodness, expensive indeed, even locals don't dare go there for a plate of fried rice. Sugarbun? It's been dead for ages...it's dissapearing very soon.
After that trip I don't know if you have anymore intention of visiting? But if you do decide to come, gimme a holler or maybe the other Sabahans who left a comment here. I trust they can bring you to better places.

Ah well, Dee.
I might be going again if I were to scale Sabah. Probably went with low expectation people that is why so sien. Haha!
The friends who took me around are West Malaysians who established business in KK. Of coz, they are loaded so they are paying for our meals lah. Not complaining!!
I bet KK would be a cool place if you scale the mountain, then go to Sapi instead of Memutik - some fellas called us up and told us not to go to Sapi because there were too many immigrants! And, probably hope the weather permits us to try the hotspring. It was raining most of the time while we were there, so I guess, part of the reason we didn't enjoy it because of the rain.
Thanks for your concern. I will mail you if I were to visit KK again.

Goodness! Ocean Seafood!? I guess your friend bring you the wrong place to eat seafood. Basically to be honest...Sabah is the best place to have fresh and cheap seafood.
I suggest you to go Pulau Sipadan for diving (if you plan to go back to Sabah for 2nd visit) the water is better than Redang.
Please next bring a Sabahn fren with you. Sure you will no go wrong.

I do agree with most of the comments made by the bloggers here. You went to the wrong places. Been to KK last 3 mths spend 4 days and we loved it!
We didnt have frens to take us ard but we managed to eat good & cheap seafood, went to Sapi, Manukan, Gaya & Sulug (we love this place - no one there total privacy however lots of sand flies!).
We even went like the locals, go and ride the boat to the kampung nelayan and jalan2 there. Altho we look alittle alienated there but all of them were so nice and hospitable.
The RM6 of your 'what fuck tax' is the fees for entering Marine Park. Do you know that the islands there is a Marine Park? Or do you know what is a marine park in the 1st place? The money is used for conservation which I still think its is too low as people who come in dont know and give a shit abt marine life and how to respect it.
So moral of the story... Pls do your homework before shitting / bitching about other people's town. I am also a town girl (all my life) but I dont bitch about little things in life that makes it colorful.. :o) hehehehe..
