Gravatar 'nite, Susan! Sweet dreams.

Gravatar Repeating this from the last thread--it seems like "edit" is no longer an option when you go into "manage comments" at Haloscan. Don't know if that's a fluke or an intentional change.

It would suck not to be able to fix typos and such any more.

Gravatar Think I'd better hit the hay. The hot, muggy weather really tires me out.

Good night, friends.

Gravatar Time for me to turn in as well.

Gravatar Went off to write to kimmy...
SOOO grateful that she posted her addy! ♥

Now I HAVE TO drop into bed.
I am utterly exhaustified!!!

Gravatar I'll be up for awhile.

Good night to the rest of you on the East coast!

Gravatar There's a space across from my apartment that's slightly larger than a football field. On the 4th, which my grandson once dubbed "Underpants Day." I take a half gallon of bubble solution and a giant wand and fill the field with bubbles for about an hour.

Loads of fun, and I also have little bottles and wands or anyone who wants to join in. Thank Goodness for the local 99 cent store.

Gravatar Sounds like a blast, Subway!

You left out the part of why it's "Underpants Day"... Or, do we want to know?

Oooohhh! THANKS! Now I can clear my mind of the picture of Subway blowing bubbles wearing just his underpants! (If one can *ever* clear one's mind of such a picture...)

Ally's Mom relates:

It was not the news we wanted.
It looks like our time in Boston has been stretched to about October.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~
We responded:
This is a real blow to your hopes and probably makes a mess of Ally's Mom's teaching schedule for the coming semester. It's okay to feel sadness & angst and shed some tears. (We did, so you sure get to!)
Then we'll all pick up and see what needs to be done today. Let today's joys and struggles be sufficient.
We gather that the medical community randomises this decision because they don't yet know whether one or two transplants is the better treatment in the long run? We hope this extra bumpy ride will translate to better protection and good health for Ally all her life.
What do you need while in Boston? Please give us all some useful things to do to make your lives a little bit easier. Some instruction about what's not helpful is also welcomed. Will you want cards? Sent to the hospital or to the house? No stuffed animals, right? If folks send gift certificates for food, will you be able to make use of any of them? (Got preferences?) Also, what can folks do to help Ally's Dad when he's at home?
Wave your wand and the lot of us will find ways to make it so!
YOU ARE LOVED AND SUPPORTED...WHATEVER IT TAKES!!
XOXOXXX Ally's Great Uncle & Ally's Great Aunt ♥♡
Gravatar FYI,
The news they didn't want is that Ally has to have TWO stem cell transplants instead of just one.
So, instead of being home from mid-August on,
they have to either stay in Boston or soon go back
and be there into October.
In addition to this being a LOT more for one and a half year old Ally to go through,
her Mom is an elementary school teacher.
Candles invited.
I am so grateful to you all for your faithfulness.
Nearly always half the candles lighted come from you!!
Gravatar Ally's schedule:
July 10 - Mid August: Chemo 7 + Stem Cell Transplant in Boston.
Late August/Early September - Early October: Chemo 8 + Stem Cell Transplant #2 in Boston
After Transplant: Radiation and 6 months quarantine.
And here's one for YOU!
How are you feeling today?
Gravatar Stay tuned for an update shortly on Hurricane Bertha.
The storm reached hurricane status this morning,
and may already be (at least close to) a Category 3.
Currently it is heading for the east coast, maybe around the Carolinas net weekend.
It would be bad for something that big to hit during wildlfe fledging season!
It could curve toward the NE and smash across Bermuda...then who knows.
There is still a chance that Florida could get the hit.
This is the first Atlantic hurricane of the season.
Gravatar Fluffy is in the hospital, and has to stay overnight. She's dehydrated and they're taking care of that; but, they don't know why she's been throwing up the past few days.
We're terribly worried about her. Good vibes would be *greatly* appreciated.
Gravatar The first hurricane of the season has quickly become a major hurricane!
Big Bertha is now a Category 3~!!!
Maximum sustained winds..115mph
Located at 20.1 N, 52.1 W.
Movement WNW near 12mph
Minimum Central pressure = 948MB.
This storm dropped 50 mb in 6 hours and winds increased by 55mph in 14 hours.
Gravatar Catreona!!
Our kitty barfed eight times in two days last week!
We changed ALL her cat food to fresh food
and she suddenly got better.
She barfed once yesterday, but that's all.
We think all the hot humid weather made her food go stale faster than usual.
But let's be sure: What brand food does Fluffy eat?
Emma-cat eats Purina (dry), Fancy Feast (wet), and Friskies (dry).
Gravatar {{{ =^. .^= Fluffy =^. .^= }}}
Gravatar How did you do the big hearts on your candle note, listener? I would like to do that too. I never realized you were a great aunt. You look too young.
I am sorry to hear Ally needs two treatments instead of one. Let us know when you get a response and if there is anything we can do to help.
Gravatar That was me up above.
Gravatar Thanks, listener.
Gravatar So, you want to hear my latest adventure? Go to take the bus today...super humid in addition to hot. For the 4th time, the bus doesn't show. So I had to walk. After only 5 minutes I was dripping in sweat.
I walk a mile to my bank. I am too hot so I go to the store next door to cool off and refresh before I meet with the VP.
Then I go to the bank. You have to sign in to meet with these 20-somethings who are rude and unhelpful. I signed in. This bank used to have such good help and really went down in the last year.
So, this "kid" "helps" me. I tell him I need to meet with so and so about my IRA. He then informs me she doesn't have an office there.
"What? Then how come last time I was in the other bank rep told me she was the one I needed to talk to? Where is her office?"
"Oh, it isn't far. Just down the street."
"Okay, so I can walk from here?"
"Well, you have to go over the overpass and ...."
Yeah, right. Not only is that too far but it is not safe on foot. Ugh!
Third time they either lied to me or misinformed me.
Then he says, "Why don't you call her and see if she can meet you here?"
Okay, good idea. I call her and leave a message. Then I wait for her to call back. No go. Wait. Wait. Hour later...nothing.
So, tomorrow I have to find a way to her office. I swear they are just doing this so I cannot get my money and close out my account.
Gravatar Our kitties eat Science Diet, a dry food. But, they also get soft food, and what that is seems to depend on what Dad can get on sale. We do have ten, count 'em, ten kitties, after all. AFAIK though it's always either purina or Friskies. Puffy Fluff isn't crazy about the soft food, and it seems she throws up after eating that, not the hard (dry) food.
It was soft food that made Princess sick...
We have an Emma Kitty too. She only eats hard food.
Gravatar Cheryl, I'm sympathetic, but can't quite get the computer to settle down...
Gravatar The adventure continues.
So I tell the guy the story I have told all the others about my not getting my statements. I tell him it is not legal to only give investment statements twice yearly. He says, "Yeah, we do them quarterly."
"Really? Because last time I was here XXXX called someone at your HQ who said twice yearly. In fact, you are both wrong. You ARE supposed to be sending them to me monthly. I got access online finally and found all my old statements so that still brings me to my point about how messed up my account is since you changed it last summer."
His repsonse? "Really? Oh."
No apology, nothing.
ME: "While I am here, I want to change back to the free account I was supposed to have".
So, literally in less than a minute he changes me back. Or so he tells me, but given their history of lying to me I don't trust him.
For one year they messed me up and it takes just a minute to correct? Even the woman four weeks ago didn't do it. Then I tell him that I don't believe it is taken care of and I want something in writing.
"I can show you on the screen, see?" He says as he points to the screen.
ME: "That doesn't help me. Look. Here is the deal. You all have been putting me through hoops since day one and I filled out paperwork to set up my account, paperwork to change it before, so why is there no paperwork now? I am not going to just trust you given the history here. I want something in writing."
He keeps insisting it is changed. I don't' believe him. They owe me $132 plus interest on fees they charged on an account they screwed up. I finally tell him that I am sorry but I am not leaving the bank until I have something in writing.
He can't get rid of me and I refuse to leave my chair to let other customers meet with him. I just sit there and stair at him. Ha! He doesn't care. A man more disinterested in his job I have yet to meet.
I kid you not, this is what he does. This is his solution (instead of just printing the account info from his computer like they did the last time and I point out he should be doing.)
He takes his business card and writes that my account is changed back and I have the same original reserve and signs it with some illegible chicken scratch signature. Well, at least it is all in his handwriting if I need to prove it later on.l However, he doesn't even put my account info on it so I had to add that.
Now I have to write a letter and send certified mail to the federal office to get my fees back because the @ssholes will not credit me on an account they admit a former employee f@#ked up on. She no longer works there, they can't figure out what she did to my account, so their attitude is screw it. Customer loses.
So, I am going to ask for the cost of the certified letter refunded too. Unbelievable!!!
My goal is to get all my money back then switch to a credit union.
Gravatar OK, now, what's the title of this person you need to see? If she works at the bank, why isn't her office *in* the bank she works at? Are you sure she exists? And, finally, is there someone higher up you could jump to?
Gravatar After I get this one straightened out, I have two credit cards to fight (both Citibank) then have to try to get my other investment account which I am sure I will get screwed over on too.
Well, I just talked to the owner of a store I am sitting in right now and boy does he have a story for me.
Gravatar On Friday he came to open his shop and the coffee sign was stolen. Who would steal the sign of someone else's logo and such? Anyway, their air conditioning had not been working so he got the fuse fixed. Then he came in last week and one day it was super hot again. Turns out someone stole the switch.
Get this, you have to climb on top of the roof to steal it. This is not your typical roof, it is super high. The only way to access it is with a professionals ladder because it is at least two stories high. The kicker? The switch only costs $4.
Yes, crazy Tucson. Risk falling and breaking your next and getting jail time for a $4 fuse.
The he tells me they had to get their cooler inside fixed and the company eneded up having to replace it. The replacement was free because the old one was defective. But they wanted to charge him for labor. He is a small business owner so not big pockets.
Labor for not even an hour job? $1,400!
Con artists and ripoffs abound.
He also told me how they had their copper piping stolen but that is very common here. There are actually professional rings that cut and steal copper all over the place from businesses and homes and sell it. We have some new state laws because of it but it is still a problem.
Gravatar Yeah, there's nothing like talking to people. Nine times out of ten, their story is even worse than your own.
Gravatar Cat, I asked to speak to the bank president and she is "not in". Typical.
Yeah, I wonder that about the person I need to see too. I did get a business card and the address so we will see tomorrow if said person exists.
Hell, this is WELLS FARGO! A major financial institution. I have had them for 18 years when it was Norwest. Had no issues with Norwest and when Wells took over got all these fees and money missing from my account (lost over $500 in the past two). At this point I don't believe anyone can be so incompetent so it has to be organized theft of customers in my mind.
Gravatar "breaking your next"
s/b breaking your neck. Mind to hand disconnect, lol.
Gravatar I saw on the national news that people strip electrical wires and even parts of power plants. Not only does this cause power outages, but the thieves could get fried. Apparently, though, copper prices are up enough to make such dangerous and stupid stunts worth wile.
Gravatar listener at 5:47 pm
Was that the code for me or is that something else?
Gravatar listener, Vermont has hurricanes? I new Maine did but never thought Vermont did.
Gravatar Cat, sorry to hear about Fluffy. Sending good vibes your way. I love cats.
Gravatar Okay, listener. I realize now you are sending a message about Fluffy, lol. I finally recognized the cat ears.
Gravatar Heat can stress animals the way it does to humans, even if one doesn't have medical issues. They need more salt in the summer. Best is sea salt. Lots of water without salt replacement can worsen things. That is why you will see a lot of pets licking our skin more in the summer.
Salt loss is one of the factors in vomiting. It is a sign of dehydration so it isn't always just the food. Just a tip for you all as the resident barf queen, lol.
Ironically, before my Addison's I rarely vommited. Hated it so much as a kid.
Gravatar Thanks for the good wishes, Cheryl. It has been unusually hot and humid thus far this year, and I thought Fluffy was perhaps stressed by the heat.
Uh, what does it mean when a kitty throws up but only produces foam?That's happeneda couple of times now with Fluffy.
Yeah. Isn't that ASCII kitty thingy cute? Took me quite some time to work out what it was.
Gravatar I apologize for all the typos. I'm using FireFox which is great, only Window-eyes doesn't work optimally with it - or rather, I can't work out how to make Window-eyes work optimally with it - so I can't quite hear everything the same as with the talking browser. Unfortunately, the talking browser keeps crashing, which is why I'm taking a break from it.
I cut and paste them from here!
I have never figured out how to ascii them over there.
Gravatar Catreona, it most likely means there's nothing left to barf up but she's still having the heaves only they're not quite dry heaves.
Take note of the colour and let the vet know.
Gravatar Dry heaving is more often than not dehydration, and the "only foam" sounds like that is what it is. That is not a good state for the cat to be in.
I get that a lot when I am dehydrated. Don't let it go on too long. I would recommend googling how to replace electrolyte balance in cats but if it has gone on more than 3 days, take the kitty to the vet. Even three days can be a crisis.
Will look for more but I am really thinking it is dehydration. If the cat has any parasite infections, that can trigger dehydration issues too.
How are the bowel movements?
Gravatar No, I meant on the candle page. So you create it here and then copy and paste there? I live it. It shows up nice and big over there.
Gravatar Here in Vermont, being inland we don't take direct hits from hurricanes, but they do run us over from time to time.
This particular one, Bertha, is still way out in the Atlantic,
but is gaining strength at an impressive rate.
It may curve out to sea, raking poor Bermuda over the coals,
or it may slam into the coast somewhere between NC and Florida,
or it may curve part way then come along the upper east coast.
(Probabilities are in that order.)
Gravatar Yep, I copy and paste from here to there.
Anything ascii can be used, come to think of it.
I'll go over right now and try to post this, for Princess Ally...
We need change on many levels or the economic picture is very bleak.
But we will donate when we can.
Gravatar Okay, I am back home. Thanks for all those codes listener. It will help me in the future if I remember where this thread is, lol.
Yes, things are tight for everyone. I noticed food costs from grocery to restaurants have really skyrocketed. These nuts I used to buy by the pound are now sold by the half pound and they are 3 times more expensive than 3 years ago! So that is really 6 times.
I went to get groceries and only came back with 1/3 of what I needed because everything has jumped up so high. I skipped the eggs and will have to find a different binder for my latkes. I ended up having to get the non-organic produce too, because the cheaper organic store is too far away and I can't afford what they charge at the supermarket. Even the pesticide produce was super pricey. I usually wait for their sales which can be 50% off and stock up then.
This business I was at today had their old prices on their flier but must have increased them just recently because everything on the board was 30 cents more. They are a small business too. Everyone is getting squeezed. I love that place but I keep telling them they need creative ways to advertise because no one can find them. You need high volume to make up for a bad economy and if you increase the prices too often it had the opposite effect of turning your current customers off. That happened with a place I used to frequent but they raised their prices 60% while downsizing their portions and outpriced me. So, they lost one of their best customers.
The cheapest way to advertise especially for small businesses, is to make small fliers which you can do four to a page, then walk the apartment complexes nearby and put them on the door and make sure the back side has a map of the place so they can find it. Works much better than putting them on cars. These complexes are pretty easy to walk and you can hit 200-300 potential customers in a couple of hours with nothing but a few cents per flier. And since they are in the area of the business, they are your most likely clientèle anyway, so it is very targeted. I just discovered the place by accident it is so hidden away. They are spending $$ advertising in publications that their potential customer based doesn't even read.
Maybe I will make a prototype and offer to walk in my area because there are two big complexes I pass every day plus a big housing development. I could see if he would do it in exchange for goods so we both get a little deal. I would even put a source code on it so he could track the response rates and see if it helps his business or not. In that same area, 3 long term businesses just closed within the past few months and it is a high trafficked area so it is not for lack of being a good location. The owner is such a sweetheart and I really want them to succeed. Even with their price increase they are still one of the best values in town.
Gravatar listener, do you have code for other things, like animals or different spiritual symbols. Not religious, just overall spiritual?
Gravatar Heh. Just got an email from my diehard Republican friend who works for the government and does military contracts. We are so night and day politically but he is a nice guy. And I am working on him.
Gravatar I haven't been around for a while. Another grant deadline. Turned it in first thing this morning, so I had the day off.
So what did I do? Read my e-mail for a change. Spent about four hours stuffing envelopes for the Disability Pride Parade -- 70 groups marching/rolling this year, and a lot of them have motor vehicles. Plus, for the first time, we'll have a drum and bugle corps.
Then I got my office straightened up just enough that I could put the fan in the window. The weather being what it is, that's a real relief.
So now it's time for bed. Blood donation tomorrow, then back to work.
They beat up on me at the hospital over the weekend--or rather the ER got beat up and I got part of it. Lazy today, slept late, and am feeling moderately human. Had a bad headache, but a couple of Tyelon (well, generic acetaminophen) and some time, and that is taken care of. Put Daughter*in*Art*School back on the train to Berkeley this afternoon--good to see her. She helped her mom with Japanese English interpreting at a raisin plant tour this morning.
Gravatar Tyelon = Tylenol. Typo rate goes up when sleep deprived. Herewith the Obama pieces:
===========
All of McCain's Base Belongs to Us: Why It Won't Even Be Close
Seth Grahame-Smith July 1, 2008
..."I don't care if footage of Obama snorting coke off Scarlett Johansson's boobs surfaces in late October. All it will do is bolster his standing with white males. I don't care if McCain is introduced by a resurrected Jesus Christ at the convention. All it will do is piss off Joe Lieberman. McCain won't just be defeated, he'll be crushed. And not just Bob Dole crushed, but crushed in a way that redefines the political map for the next 25 years."
This raises sanguine to unwonted, but certainly not unwanted levels...the quote above is just a teaser.
Bob Cesca July 3, 2008
"...choosing to support Senator Obama has never been about issues, but rather, it's always been about, 1) electing a thoughtful, smart president we can reference with pride -- a president who won't flatly embarrass us every damn day, and 2) electing a president who can inspire and negotiate the necessary support he'll need to roll back the darkness of the Bush years..."
