Cheryl, I just contributed $9.14
Sorry it's not more, but that's all I had in my PayPal account and I just can't spare even a penny out of my bank account.
Also, on topic , I'm sharing my hotel room with Charlie (He couldn't afford to come otherwise). I emailed Ofer too, but didn't hear back. Does he still need a place to sleep or did he find something?

Jessica, thanks so much! I just sent you an email. Very much appreciated. I thought the .14 was a Howard Dean code.
I haven't heard from Ofer and I don't have his phone number anymore since I have had so many computer problems and lost a lot of data. You might try him one more time since he might have been gone or the email got buried. That has happened to me before.
Renee, thank you for posting this on the front page.

Thank you too, Denise. I am feeling better already. It is just when so much hits at once and keeps hitting...
Cat, yes that is PayPal. Chipin is a charity group that is basically a front for free that lets you set up a cool widget but it redirects you straight to PayPal. I had donated to a domestic abuse shelter in SD last year and that is how I heard about them and the ability to set up little fundraisers.

It takes about 3-4 days to get from Paypal to me and I leave on the 16th, so I was being safe chosing the 11th since I leave the morning of the 16th. The 12th works too and I can extend it if necessary.
I appreciate any diary but please don't put about my being on my last $$ or about my bank situation because that was intended just for the HEP family.
I don't really want the rest of BFA to know my personal troubles other than I am just looking for some help with transportation costs.

Okay, you all have to see this video.
http://underourskin.com
I have believed a long time many of these diseases are related to what we are doing to the environment and pesticides is a big one. I had some exposure and not sure if you that I was in the process of being tested for MS which my neurologist was pretty sure I had when I lost my medical insurance. I was able to stop my tremors and paralysis on my own through alternative methods, mainly supporting my immune system and getting some of the toxins out, although I still have a lot. Also found out indoor mold was the biggest trigger for my seizures.
I read today that a woman who has angiomas like me (I have literally 10s of thousands) was able to reverse hers through mercury detox. I spend most of my time on medical boards and don't get to the political stuff as much as I used to as you can tell.
Anyway, I found the video on Rosie.com. Love her blog. She converts more Republicans than any famous person out there, including politicians. When I had money, I used to buy from her store because she had fun stuff and all the proceeds (100%) go to her kids charity.

So many people on my health boards for other issues also have lyme disease. You never heard of it prior to the 1980s which makes me wonder what we did to the environment to cause this bacterial and viral run amok. I got lots of tick bites as a kid and back then they didn't seem to carry the disease.

Ally had another great day!
Her Mom relates...
SATURDAY, JULY 05, 2008 05:33 PM, EDT
Hello,
Today was (and still is) another fun day.
We spent some time with friends ... Ally LOVES to pull grass out of lawns, AND she got to see a wild turkey!
We were able to find a car seat for Ally today. We could not find the exact one we wanted, but we really needed to find one before the big drive to Boston, so we decided on a different one.
Ally finally gets a bath tonight!
(She has had to miss some baths lately because of the bone marrow biopsy and the bandages covering those up.) Chances are she will still have a stinky foot (which is good....because the game would not be nearly as fun if it were "clean foot")
Happy Long Weekend! One more day!

Are there any Jewish folks here who can help me with a recipe? I can't remember the name of it but we made them during Jewish holidays when I lived with my NJ Jewish family. Anyway, they are these potato patty things that you make and you can also make them from left over matzo. I am trying to make a version of them not with potatoes but with some left over gluten-free flours I have as a low cost meal. Just experimenting but if anyone knows what I am talking about and has a simple recipe, would love it. I can't remember if it was Yom Kippur or Hanukkah or what where we made them but I am sure you can tell me. It has been a few years, lol.

Phil, that is what I was thinking with Katrina too. When Marcia volunteered there I worried about her. I knew I couldn't do it so just donated a bunch of stuff to World Care. Are they involved in helping Iowa folks? I know they do a lot worldwide and it all goes to the people or at least more than 90%, unlike most charities that have 70%.

Wolfgang Puck has an interesting one that I could make with some modifications:
Potato Latkes
Recipe courtesy Wolfgang Puck
8 medium potatoes, peeled
1 medium onion
Lemon juice
1 cup flour
1 cup milk
1 egg
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/8 cup melted butter
Freshly grated nutmeg
Salt and pepper to taste
Watercress, to garnish
Caviar, to garnish
Applesauce, for garnish
Creme fraiche, for garnish
Grate potatoes and onions on a large-hole grater. Splash with lemon juice and squeeze out excess water.
Mix flour, milk, egg, baking powder, and nutmeg. Add to the potatoes and then add the melted butter.
Heat some peanut oil in a skillet and fry until golden on one side. Flip, and cook the same way on the other.
Serve with watercress, caviar, applesauce, and creme fraiche.
**For Passover, omit the baking powder and replace the flour with matzo (ground into flour), which will make a slightly denser latke. Fry it slowly.

Big corp farms and all the lack of quality control is often the culprit. Plus food is not as good with long travels on trucks. Wish I lived where I could have a garden again. Tried container gardens but the heat and sun killed them all.

Defiinitely Latkes!
I make my own version.
I just grate potato, onion and carrot (sometimes a little sweet potato) and add a bit of corn meal. Maybe an egg, but that's optional if you're using a griddle. A little butter on the griddle is okay, but not necessary.

I worked all day and it was a highly surreal day:
(A) As I drove up to Hopkins Bookshop
I noted that the Cathedral has a new sign up by the corner
announcing itself and "Hopkins Bookstore."
HUH?
There are now two signs that read Bookshop and one that reads Bookstore.
It has NEVER in all its 26 years been Bookstore, always BookSHOP.
People are always trying to remember at the counter what to write on the check.
And I think, Oh, yeah, this will help.
[I left a message for my boss:
The Bookshop could say to the Cathedral,
"Have I been with you so long,
and yet you do not know me?"]

(B) Then, I get to the door and there's a big spiderweb on the door handle.
Geesh, you close for one day. Ha!
(C) I scurry in, disarm the alarm, up the lights and *viola!* ~
discover thin glass splintered all over the back room...
Apparently a lightbulb shattered to smithereens
including all over a keyboard.
So I vacuum everything.

(D) Then, some old friends came in whom I haven't seen in many years (moved away, and now are back).
They'd never been in the shop before,
and not far from the front door they found a cell phone and an iPod with earphones.
They were just turning it in (we are now the local police too, I guess, ha!) and didn't know I worked there.
So, while there they bought some children's books for their granddaughter who was with them.

(E) After they left I tried to figure out the phone number of the cell phone, but no luck.
I did manage to find a message on it from "Jes" with a phone number.
Called it and the person who answered was able to guess the make of the phone.
She then CALLED IT (remember, even *I* didn't know the number), and it definitely was her friend Dave's phone.
So she came by and got it for him.
That was so funny.
Here I am in this interfaith bookshop inside a cathedral
frequented by clergy and church ladies,
and in walks a young woman with tatooes, toting her cell phone and pack of cigarettes,
with punk hairdo and makeup.
I told her (quite honestly) that I liked the tattoo on her arm
(It looked like an Egyptian bracelet. Very cool.)
She seemed pleased. Said she didn't even know the shop was here
and started to look around.
So I explained that it's an interfaith bookshop
and she stayed and looked some more.
Also, she wouldn't take the iPod incase it wasn't her friend's.
She blew me away with her honesty and intelligence...very quick thinker.
A short while later she called to say the iPod was her friend's after all,
and she came back for it.
I remarked on what a good friend she was to come twice.
She said her friend lost his wallet too, and we were both sad it wasn't found.
Just as I was thinking someone had stolen all of this off her friend
probably during the fireworks,
she said he'd been out jogging and figured it had all fallen out of his pocket.
These were our only customers the whole day.
I earned my keep by entering upcoming new books information into computer inventory.
Long day. Gonna catch some zzzz's.

My Mother married at 19, had her first baby at 20. She had five surviving children, one died and two miscarriages. She told us not to get married before 30, lol. I still cannot believe she had all those kids because she is such a small boned, tiny woman. Her pregnancies were very hard too and we were average to large babies. Plus she was suffering from Graves then hypothyroid and untreated at the time. They were very poor to and she did not have a lot of help. We were one of the *small* families in my area. Many families had 12 to 15 kids. No, we aren't Mormon. Catholic.
None of us did marry before 30 except my younger brother. He was 29...just 5 months away from his 30th.

"Here I am in this interfaith bookshop inside a cathedral"
I didn't know your bookstore was in a Cathedral. Cool.
When I was a teenager the top thing I wanted to do when I moved to NYC was visit St. Patrick's Cathedral. I love good architecture.
We have a really nice mission here that they restored a few years ago. I only went once because it is clear across town over an hour and a half away but took lots of photos and film until the priest nicely told us we can't film during mass, only afterward. Yeah, you can tell who was the first timer. Ran into a former co-worker who happens to live near by and goes all the time. It is located at the edge of an Native American Reservation. My very religious Mother love it too.

Yes, you really cannot judge a book by its cover so to speak. I worked with a friend in accounting many moons ago and she had tattoos all over. I am not really into tattoos but hers were great. I don't like when they use too much black and too close together because it ruins it. I have seen some really beautiful ones though. I like Kimmy's Howard Dean one.

I love good architecture.
LOL! You won't find any at this cathedral!
It's a cement block and really boring in my book.
There was once a gorgeous Gothic cathedral, but it burned to the ground (arson).
So they built a cathedral that cannot burn.
Too bad, too, IMNSHO. It is really ugly!
Give me the children's chapel at the Anglican Cathedral in Montreal, or the gargoyles of Washington National Cathedral or the windows of Westminster Abbey!
Allison Janney played C.J. on West Wing...
and definitely a favourite of ours there!
Hubby is 7th of 10 children, cHeRyL. I am 3rd of 4. In his case, the family was Catholic. In my case, the family just happened that way. When people asked us how many children we planned to have, we'd say, "More than 4 and less than 10."
I feel for your mother! I had big babies too, mostly, and I'm 5 ft tall. But I had great medical care.

I am trying to find the photo of Kimmy's Dean tattoo. There was a great one published in late 2003 in a major newspaper. I can find tons of photos of her on Google, but not that one.
One of these days I will need to email her a photo from my punk days which preceded hers by about a decade. She is pretty punk. I was ugly punk, lol.
I was even voted "girl most likely to become a punk rock star" in my senior class. HA! I only think I dressed punk about 3 times during high school so not really sure where that came from because my punk days were more college but it was a small conservative town so just my hair color was considered wild.

Back again.
Herr Puck's latkes recipe must be nice if one likes that sort of thing, but is far too complicated for my tastes; there is virtue in simplicity.
listener--thanks for the good story.
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear things didn't work out for Frank and Kimmy--but glad to hear things seem to be good for her now. Here's to them staying that way!
Oh great, you found the photo of Kimmy's tattoo--it is a nice one.

"Oh, the memories. Dean was the original Hope candidate and he also spoke the truth, not to the corporatists. I don't know if there will ever be a campaign like that again.

cHeRyL!--You said it. I think it was a once in several generations sort of thing. Even if it didn't succeed, it sure busted things loose, and pointed the way.
I was moderately surprised I could remember my PayPal ID--visit a coffee shop or something on me.

Going fishing for a week while wife bakes on the beach. We do meet up for supper and dancing in the evenings...lol
I won't be able to light a candle for Ally 'till I return but I'll be thinking good thoughts for her listener. I tried last night to send a little $$$ Cheryl's way but my card wouldn't go through paypal...glad to see others stepped up to the plate to help you Cheryl. When I get back it'll be full speed ahead with Dem. Comm. stuff.
Later all...hope I don't return as a lobster (I do have a carload of sunscreen...lol).
