Hi all. Been recovering from food poisoning and today got a bad burn on three fingers. Ugh.
Sorry. Flat Barack will never measure up to the original...Flat Howard.

My sweet chocolate lab has dilated cardiomyopathy. I can't believe it. He has been so strong and healthy. This came on at age 10 out of nowhere. Just a little coughing. The vet tried antibiotic and prednisone, then xrays and ultrasound echocardiogram showed a very damaged heart. Very guarded prognosis of 3 months. He is taking enalapril, lasix and another newer drug. I'm hoping he will get better and this newer drug will help him. I expected him to live at least 4 or 5 more years. Well, maybe he will anyway. I am doing everything I can think of to make him healthy. He is not overweight. If anyone knows anything about taking care of this problem, I would love to have some help.

Just be careful, would you please?

JayDean...
=HUGS!=
Our cat had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy ... which lead to strokes.
We had to give him a quarter of a baby aspirin each day.
That helped for several years!
Dogs may be different, though, and I don't know the difference between dilated and hypertrophic.
All day our kitty has been barfing on the carpet.
We don't know what's wrong!
Her food is all fresh, and a good brand.
If she's still barfing tomorrow, we call the vet.
=^. .^=

OK. I'm off to read The Bible Today, or at least a few articles therein.
Good night, dear friends.

Here's the report on Ally's Day in Boston by her parents...
MONDAY, JUNE 30, 2008 04:58 PM, EDT
Well, Ally was a star at Dana Farber! She made lots of friends and the doctor was impressed she never missed a chemo date and that her central line is doing so well.
They said a lot of stuff to us: it boils down to this: she will get chemo for the first 7 days, this chemo will give her similar side effects to what we have already seen, except they will be worse. Right after chemo she will get her transplant. It should take about 13-20 days for the transplant to take. She will be able to come home when her ANC level is 500 for 3 days in a row. (They are estimating she will be down there for a total of about a month.)
Things get tricky after that. We should know by the end of the week if she will have to go back and do it all again, or if she is just doing 1 transplant. If she is randomized for 2 transplants she comes home for 2 weeks in between and then goes back and it is basically the same schedule as above. Then she comes home for good! (of course she will be followed for pretty much the rest of her life)

We were expecting at least one big surprise today and here it is: NO VISITORS for 6 MONTHS!

Flat Barack is nice, but definitely lacks the charisma of Flat Howard.
Which flat would you rather vote for?

Good luck, Jay. That's rotten luck. I think dilated and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy must be the same thing by two different names, but am not an authority. Don't try medicine that worked for one species of animal on another without checking first--there are BIG differences in toxicity across species. A chocolate bar can kill a dog or an alpaca, for instance; and there are big differences in response to aspirin.
I was involved in a case a couple years back where the [human] patient had suddenly come down with dilated cardiomyopathy; the cardiologists said it could have been caused by a simple viral illness, that didn't seem like any big deal.
Bummer.

JayDean hugs to you and your doggie. I hope for a good outcome.
Cheryl - hope you're on the mend. Sunburn is bad enough but when you're feeling yucky already....heal soon.
Ally and family - you're so strong. Continued prayers.
