Howard Empowered People Comments

Gravatar Unity is first - thanks Howard for pointing the way.

DARLING children Jessica. I'm catching some of it on the news right now.

Gravatar They're still counting casualties back home, and so when Zheng Jie completed the biggest victory of her career Friday at Wimbledon, she resisted any temptation to leap or squeal or pump her fist or collapse to the grass in glee.

Instead she merely cracked a slight smile, hoping her family, friends and fans in China could do the same.

The 133rd-ranked Zheng beat new No. 1 Ana Ivanovic 6-1, 6-4. It was the latest in a series of first-week upsets, and one easy to applaud because Zheng is a native of Chengdu, the capital of earthquake-stricken Sichuan province.

"Of course I hope to make people happy with my win," Zheng said. "I want more people to have their homes, be fine and happy."

Gravatar I just checked the garden and we apparently had a bad storm while I was gone. Broke 2 of my squash plants right off at the base! There was 2 baby squash growing on those!!!

Gravatar First the Mini Cooper, now the baby squash. Boo boos everywhere.

I'm in a goofy mood tonight, all alone up in my hotel room. But tomorrow I'm going to the Boston Museum of Science. Last time I was there I was 14 years old. There are a 2 IMAX movies and I can't decide whether to see the Grand Canyon or the Eiger in the Swiss Alps.

Gravatar Great pictures, Jessica! Do tell us more about what it was like...

Gravatar Unity is a lot better when everyone is supposed to be uniting behind the candidate you support. I remember how annoyed I felt when we were told we should unite behind Kerry...

The (dis)organization of the event was really bad. We had to park at 1 of 2 locations about 1/2 hour away from the event. They had 15 school busses looping to each parking place, but that wasn't nearly enough (1 hour round trip), so there was a loooong wait at the parking area. Then when we arrived at the event location, we had to be shuttled to the end of another line (not kidding) and then wait in that line to get through security.

We were able to get pretty close to the stage, so that was cool. I had a hard time concentrating on what Obama actually said though. I was totally distacted by the crowd, my kids, etc. Plus the crowd was loud, so it was hard to hear. Also, several people passed out around us. From the heat or whatever. We had brought water with us, but there was no water (free or for sale) nearby.

Then after the event there was a mad rush to get back on the busses to go back to the parking areas. We actually managed to get on one of the first round of busses, but then there was a total gridlock of busses and people so we were stuck in that for at least a 1/2 hour (I don't know what the heck the police were doing there...not crowd or traffic control!). There was nowhere for the busses to turn around. It was a total mess. I'm sure there were people who waited hours to get out of there.

Gravatar Oh yeah, Hillary did seem sincere about supporting Obama, for whatever that's worth...

Gravatar Thanks for the report, Jessica. You and your family are certainly more dedicated supporters than those of us who decided against waiting in line in our *own* town.

Gravatar Not more dedicated, just crazier

Gravatar I'm pretty tired. Going to lay down for a while. Good night blog.

Gravatar Excellent photos (how can they be that TALL already?!)
and I am grateful for a report I can trust.
I am so completely sick of this "we're unified" front
when there is still so much bad feeling on both sides.
I don't NEED them to be unified!!!
I just need the Clintons to stop grabbing the spotlight
and let us get on with the Election already!

Gravatar Yesterday I went to the cloth store and got
enough supplies to make two small lap-quilts for
my two goddaughters' babies (one due end of July, the other due end of August).

Today I washed and ironed all the cloth and cleaned out my sewing basket
to get all ready to begin the applique work.
But! Nowhere can I find my small embroidery hoop! Dang!
So now, with no car I can't get a hoop until
at least tomorrow evening
after Hubby gets home from the sailing race.
(I do NOT drive his pickup...I'm barely tall enough!)

It's funny how one mishap quickly leads to another.

So, Renee, there's a bluebird in the coffers
for whenever we need a new thread.
No hurry.
I hope to see them fledge!

Gravatar Thanks, listener. I saw your post in draft when I went to add the comment to Jessica's post.

Regarding the bluejay, it's a miracle that Winnie, our golden retriever mix, didn't get to it. Hopefully, we can keep it that way.

Earlier today, when I was on my way to the library, I saw a cat trotting across the street, with what looked like an adult bluejay in its mouth. First time I've ever seen a cat carrying anything that big.

Gravatar Iraqi officials outraged by U.S. raid in prime minister's hometown
http://news.yahoo.com/s/mcclatch...clatchy/ 2978019

Outraged Iraqi officials demanded an investigation into an early morning U.S. military raid Friday near the birthplace of Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki , saying the operation violated the terms of the handover of Karbala province to Iraqi security forces.

Karbala Gov. Oqeil al Khazaali said U.S. forces killed an unarmed civilian and arrested at least one person in the raid in the southern town of Janaja. The governor's brother, Hassanein al Khazaali , said late Friday that the Iraqi killed in the operation was a relative of the U.S.-backed prime minister.

...

"Not one Iraqi soldier took part in the airdrop, and the operation was not coordinated with any Iraqi authority," he said. "We are still looking for an answer as to why this has taken place, and we still have no logical explanation from the American forces."

Gravatar Cute huh listner?

Yippee I get to sleep in tomorrow!

Gravatar The baby birds are everywhere here too, Renee.
They are so easy to notice because they're still rather blundery.
Today I saw a goldfinch fluttery every which way before finally figuring out how to land! Ha!
Heard some bird flapping around in the birch tree,
seeming to have a little difficulty remembering how to take off.
Ran and got my binocs when I saw a very strange looking bird on the fence...large but speckled and strangely shaped for a speckled bird.
Turned out to be a newly fledged baby Robin.

Heh. Son in Ohio told us about that one, but I hadn't seen it. Have you seen this one?

Gravatar LOL yes I did see that one.

I have CNN on and Carlville was on Larry King. There was a video of Tim Russert's son Luke imitating him (split screen with Carville and King).

It was hilarious!

Gravatar Well since I'm wide awake I'm going to go read some magazines I brought with me from home. Too late to go for a walk or eat dinner.

Night good friends

Gravatar Denise--you got me with the water on Mars photo; good 'un!

Gravatar Haven't been around much lately, been busy making $$$ for vacation, cleaning out apartment for son who's moving home plus a lot of Democratic committee stuff...not to mention garden & yardwork (couldn't even make it to the Obama event even though it was only an hour away...thanks for the report Jessica) but wanted to share this neat web site...
http://www.chippynews.com/worldclock.htm

Gravatar Thanks for that fascinating and very useful website, Reed!

And thanks for making time to light Ally candles in the midst of all you are doing! ♡

You seem to me to be a very well balanced and compassionate human being. ♥

Gravatar Denise got me too, Alan.

So, I wonder...
Denise, did you come all the way to Boston to see the Grand Canyon,
or did you just get closer to the Swiss Alps?

Gravatar Hubby and Fourth*Child are out on the Lake for a big sailing race
with thunderstorms slowly but surely approaching.
The good news is that they changed the course of the race.
So instead of going all the way across the Lake to Valcor Island and back,
they're simply going out around Stave island and back...
which island is MUCH closer to the Vermont side of the Lake.
=Whew!=

Hubby and I may get to spend some time together today!

Gravatar Have a great day listener, everyone.

I woke up about a half hour ago when the phone rang, asking if the engineer can come in to fix the heat! I always keep the Do Not Disturb on my door when I'm in the room, so they called. Thing is, they had the wrong room.

Oh well I'm awake now and I can go grab lunch and head off to the museum. Thought it would be raining but the overcast sky hints at it soon to come.

Now, what to have for lunch....

Gravatar The sailors are all in safely.
They got off the water just as it began to rain!

I'm off to have a lovely Anniversary!

Gravatar Well, Denise, you are in Beantown!
I'd say go for the Cod!
