Howard Dean's interview with Helen Thomas a day or so ago.

http://journals.democraticunderg...dfloridian/ 1435

It's a great interview, and I like how Helen Thomas sums it up...

"Dean is on the road four to six days a week, working to win support for the Democratic party. Now it's up to those wishy-washy candidates to promise a quick end to the war and to develop plans for universal health care if they want a winning Democratic ticket."

Gravatar Helen Thomas ROCKS!!! ♥

Gravatar Oh, listener, and earlier this evening they said on the news something about having renewed hope. This is terrible!

Bad news. Always bad news, everywhere you turn.

BTW having dealt with a fair number of shrinks and pseudo-shrinks, I can attest that they are to a person domineering, manipulative, voyeristic, sex-crazed arssholes. Even if Charlie wanted to talk to one, doing so would do nothing to help him or to clarify his own motivations and needs to him. Quiet and introspection and perhaps a loving friend to talk things over with is the medicine and therapy he needs. I pray he can have them soon, and far away from Florida!

Gravatar Good night, friends.

Gravatar Happy Birthday Demetrius!

Gravatar Have a happy, Demetrius!

We were up in Berkeley getting our daughter moved to an apartment; lots of work, but it worked out fairly well, I think. Got a pretty decent desk at a yard sale, some put-it-together-yourself furniture at Ikea. I set up a cable modem and a wired/wireless router for the first time--easy as pie. Her roommate should be moved in by now, or very soon. By the time we left, the refrigerator was looking like my wife's--i.e., very well stocked! Last night and today for recovery.

Tomorrow (Friday) evening and most of Saturday at job No. 2 (rural hospital lab), then off to Seattle at 5:55 PM as an expert witness at a court martial. (It seems I am on the guvmint's list for this sort of thing now.) Getting psyched up for it at this point.

I am working up to the idea of getting a theremin kit for my birthday and Xmas, and learning to play it. (I figure if I actually go to the trouble of building it, I will be more psychologically invested in it and more likely to continue.) Still have to think about it some. Anyone else remember the thereminist and his sweetie who met as volunteers for Howard Dean & got hitched? In Minneapolis, as I recall.

Gravatar Thankful...it was not quite a tornado:

Powerful storms ripped through northern New York, Vermont and New Hampshire Thursday evening, damaging property, downing trees and cutting power to thousands.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning during the afternoon, but late Thursday night confirmed that it was not, in fact, a twister. Instead, it was what they call straight-line wind damage, with winds estimated at 70 miles an hour. Still, people affected by the storm have a lot of damage to deal with.

Gravatar JUST SENT THIS TO ALL THREE OF MY LEGISLATORS:
Pat Leahy, Bernie Sanders, and Peter Welch...

I am very concerned that a well-respected Howard Dean supporter, who has offered workshops on Government at DemocracyFests, needs medical attention for a possible brain injury obtained through police brutality and mistreatment at the hands of small town police who have a vendetta against him for exposing voting corruption there.

The editor of Florida's High Springs Herald has interviewed this doctoral candidate in jail; below is the article from the interview. This story has a long history behind it of documented town corruption. Can you tell me who I should contact with my outrage? What do you see as his options?

Much thanks for your help!

Breaking News
Grapski not eating, says he is being mistreated in jail

By Ronald Dupont Jr.
Herald Editor

ALACHUA – Having not eaten since Sunday night, Alachua political activist Charlie Grapski sat in a jail cell interview room Thursday and made allegations of mistreatment by police and of inadequate medical treatment or no treatment at all inside the county jail.

With multiple black bruises on his arms, a 2-inch cut on his face and sleepy, red eyes, Grapski sat in a locked room at the Alachua County jail and spoke with High Springs Herald Editor Ronald Dupont Jr., who sat on the other side of a steel grate.

At least four times during the interview, Grapski stopped talking, stared partway at the ceiling and lost track of time until Dupont called his name.

Grapski said that when Alachua police arrested him Monday, they slammed his head into a door and that he got dizzy and lost track of time, not realizing what was happening until he was being dragged down an indoor hallway to a city holding cell.

Later, at the county jail, after a court hearing held over a 2-way television set-up, he had heart palpitations and passed out, hitting his head on a metal bench, then landing face first on the floor, he said.

When he awoke, he said, he received no medical treatment and that Sheriff’s deputies laughed at him and said he was running into walls, trying to hurt himself.

Sitting in a wheelchair with his arms and legs shackled Thursday, Grapski said the only freedom he has left is the choice of whether to eat – and he chooses not to, he said.

Gravatar I just got Firsties on the BBB
giving Howard and Charlie their due. ♥ ♥

Gravatar Thanks, listener.

Gravatar Just sent this to the editor of the High Springs Herald:
rdupont@highspringsherald.com

Dear Mr. Dupont,
Please accept my heartfelt thanks for interviewing Charlie Grapski in jail, telling his story, and for letting him know that his friends are worried about him. I have contacted my legislators about this situation, Sen. Pat Leahy, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Rep. Peter Welch, and linked them to your article.

Many of us wish deeply that Charlie would leave Alachua, because his pearls are being cast before swine there. We also know he has a deep sense of right and wrong and will not lightly back down. I hope it won't be the death of him.

A friend of mine received a traumatic brain injury when she slipped in her kitchen and banged her head on the counter as she fell. She lives alone, but got to an E.R., where they x-rayed her and sent her home telling her it was just a concussion. A week later she was still having dizzy spells and went to her regular doctor. After a series of medical missteps (this is still a new science in many ways), a month later she finally learned from a specialist that she had a brain injury and that it would have been best for her recovery if she had had an MRI right away, with treatment beginning swiftly. So it seems to me unconscionable that Charlie has not had proper (or even minimal!) medical treatment.

He did nothing worth being beaten or even handcuffed for. What on earth is going on down there? Thank you for caring to bring this to the public eye.

Can you tell me how someone can contribute to the funds Charlie can use at the jail? What address or phone number needs to be contacted, and by what process are we allowed to do this? If you know of a fund already set up for this purpose, please point me.

Many thanks. I have been following this story for over a year and am utterly astounded and dismayed that it continues.

Gratefully,

Gravatar good letter, Thanks listener.

Let us know of his reponse

Gravatar Reposting this from the previous comment thread:
....
The reason this new attack is happening to Charlie now is because our dual office holding suit against Watson has resulted in the Florida Retirement Service switching his retirement status from "high risk" police pension to a "senior management" status all city managers have. This move alone saved taxpayers over $1,000,000 in undeserved pension benefits that Watson would have collected if the scam had not been challenged. Needless to say Watson is PISSED. There are quite a few in Alachua who know what's coming down and fear for Charlie's life.
...
And when Charlie wanted to file a complaint, he was told that Clovis Watson could take the complaint. That sounds an awful lot like "talk to the hand".

Gravatar I appreciate how Editor Dupont ended the article...
be sure to read to the end!
He pretty much corroborates Charlie's take on the attitudes around him!

The fact that we are watching...
with the help of the High Springs Herald's cameras and folks like Ronald Dupont and Michael Canney
makes it really hard for them to kill Charlie and get away with it.

I SOOO want Charlie outta there!!!
And away from there forever!!!

Gravatar I am immensely grateful to Editor Dupont for telling Charlie we are worried about him!!!

He knows we know and are pulling for him.
That may give him more comfort than anything else.

Gravatar seashell at BBB is calling for a bat for Charlie,
but you know they'll never do it.

Can we have one here?
If so, I'll link it over there.

Gravatar Anybody got a link to a synopsis of Charlie's story?

seashell wants to send it along to Keith Olbermann!

Gravatar I'm not sure what you're asking for, listener. Where would the money go?

Gravatar Don't know of a good synopsis, but this piece from The Conservative Voice, written back in March, is a pretty sympathetic description of the situation in Alachua, and Charlie's past run-ins with the powers that be
http://www.theconservativevoice....icle/ 23141.html

Gravatar Editor Dupont mentioned a fund that Charlie can access from inside jail.

Gravatar At any rate, Renee, there's no question but that Charlie is going to need money. Can't we collect it and work out the where to send later?

Gravatar Sitka has incited a filibuster at the BBB
and no one is willing to post about anything except Charlie
until a bat is put up for Charlie!

Monica just pointed out that it's Friday evening,
so DFA may not even know until Monday.

Sigh.

Pretty please?

Gravatar It would be good to go over to BBB and tell them we have a bat here!

And I have already emailed Charlie's legal help, Atty Joe Little, as well as Editor Dupont, asking where to send it.

Gravatar I don't mean to dump that project into your lap on Demetrius' day of days, though!

Can anyone else here put up a bat here
if Renee gives the nod?

Gravatar The only place we've been told that donations can be sent is here:

Donations to the Grapski Defense can be sent to PO Box 190, Alachua, FL 32616.

Email: chicoverde at cox dot net.

Is that for bail, or for a lawyer, or what?

I know that a few people have expressed an interest in donating to a fund that Charlie could use in the commisary.

So I *really* don't know what is meant by wanting a bat. What words would accompany it? Where would people be sending money?

If there *is* a bat here, people are going to be asking questions, and I don't know the answers.

Gravatar I gave seashell the link, Renee, and she sent it with another I gave her to Keith Olbermann.

If folks have feelings about how to use the funds, please speak up.
As for me, I don't care...I just think we need to get started.

Gravatar There's a new thread.
