I did my own digging into how many times a major newspaper or its editors anywhere in the world have sued a member of the public for defamation - I found Zilch.
Newspapers often get sued by individuals , but I haven't been able to find a single case (until now) going in the opposite direction.
There's a simple reason for this - IT IS NEVER in a newspaper's long term interest to create increased legal restrictions on freedom of speech or expression. It damages its own purpose for existence.
I think this action is going to come back to haunt NST for long time.
