...here's to bear can chicken!
Canned pumpkin or yams maybe, but canned bears and chicken? Only Palin would do that!

Gravatar Pumpkin piiiiieeeeee. Happy me.

Yes please on interesting vegetarian recipes; want to make my sister-in-law something nice and I'm coming up blank except for a veggie puff pastry (asparagus, scallion or leek, sweet potato, brie) - delicious, but I'd like a new & interesting protein source.

Huh, I just had a thought: an all-the-sides vegetarian puff pastry might be pretty yummy (stuffing cooked separately from the turkey, corn, cranberries, potato, etc). Still no good protein though. Beans are too gooey for a puff pastry, and she doesn't like tofu or tempeh very much.

Gravatar I'm not sure how this would fit in your recipe but what about quinoa? High protein and pretty adaptable. Just a thought

I've not made any plans for certain. Last year I made my first pumpkin pie from the pumpkin...... and then I was addicted for a couple of months. Dammit it was goooood! Here's da pics:
http://myrtlejune.blogspot.com/2...of- turkeys.html

The little pumpkin I got at the Farmer's Market had the recipe on it and the lady there put me on the phone with her mother for further tips on preparing the pumpkin. Yummers.

I've invited a couple of single people by in case I cook there will be someone to eat the stuff. Nothing formal. But ...... now I have a terrible cold/flu thing suddenly so we'll see what's left over for the turkey budget after I rescue the economy with my kleeeeeeenex purchases.

Happy cooking to all

Gravatar Goin' to Whiteville, N.C. for Tday with fave cuzladies and educators of high-intellect, and perceptive thought. (Obama supporters, one and all. :o) )

It's a matriarchal famly. :o) Warms the cockles of my "misogynist" heart. :o) (as I was regularly accused of, at FDL and Digby's, for putting up all those clips of Hillary peeing on progressives while slipping the Rove-shiv into Obama. :o) )

The menu is usually stable.

We will attest to our piety by scarfing:

Candied yams. Home-made.

a brown-rice-and-pea casserole that is yumsome to the max.

Corn pudding.

String beans with just a hint of ham hock.

Other veggies which I've forgotten about but will recall when I see them. And eat them.

Some horsedovers of fresh broccoli, mini-carrots, and homemade dip.

SCRATCH biscuits.

A goood, succulent, ham.

And of course, we'll pay our respects to the large fowl which, in it's wild state roams throughout N.C. and much of the rest of the country. They are skittish, interesting, animals.

The also help attest to the clear cultural superiority of the southland, since only in OUR grocery stores can you, while waiting in the checkout line, purchase Turkey-Hunting videos on how to get "those really big Toms!" :o)

Incidentally, free-range or farm-grown, they make good eating.
:o)

Scratch---choco cake; coconut cake, pumpkin pie; banana pudding, etc.... Excuse the expression, but, to a "man", they are kitchen mechanics. :o) And far be it from me to show any disrespect to women expressing their creativity by feeding the hell out of us. :o)

The only downside is that everyone of the hostess, Sara's, four grandkids has won the vocal bluegrass genetic lottery. It's frustrating; except for one, Travis, none of them appreciate the gift. Shannon has a set of "pipes" that Patty Loveless or Allison Krauss would do murder for.
I have a permanent offer to her for $20 if she'll stand in front of me and sing two verses of Bill Monroe's "Cry, Cry, Darlin'".

So far, no luck.

But it'll be good fun, anyway. :o)

Gravatar Mom & I will to the local banquet facility for their annual buffet. We're just not into big cooking deals, and not enough family around to make it worthsome.

I will stick to mashed potatoes, gravy & stuffing, since I've just come out of dental surgery.

Vegetarian protein recommendation -- a "Qorn" roast, if your local natural good store carries it - best fake turkey I've ever tated. Mycoproteins, mushroom-based fake meat.

Gravatar Where are you headed for Thanksgiving?
My brother-in-law's house. I will reciprocate by having Christmas dinner at my place (it's traditional).

What will you be cooking?
I'll be bringing green beans with bacon and chestnuts, spiced carrots, and a loaf of pumpkin-walnut bread.

Do you go out to a restaurant for Turkey-Day?
Um, no.

What are some great vegetarian thanksgiving recipes or ideas?
The three recipes described above, along with roasted sweet potatoes and a few other things (I saw a great recipe for a savory bread pudding made with mushrooms - sounded tasty, and will try it sometime).

Gravatar yum pumpkin walnut bread!

thanks for the edit stevek-:-(

Gravatar I'm not sure how this would fit in your recipe but what about quinoa? High protein and pretty adaptable.

Excellent idea, thanks! Always forget about quinoa, and it wouldn't wreck puff pastry - I could maybe do a quinoa-based stuffing instead of bread stuffing. With portobello mushrooms.

Going to have to try a Qorn roast myself, that sounds good. I also want coconut cake and scratch biscuits now. And your Fujimama's menu is making me drool, TLG. (Yeah, I'm hungry.)
