my folks got a tv in, i think, 1948 when i was six. i remember getting up at 3 or 4 am to watch an atom bomb test on tv, and then running outside to watch the light from it in the se sky. i was just south of san francisco, some 400 (?) miles away. i have had periods of 3 or 4 years or more several times as an adult when i didn't watch tv. i like jon stewart better than i liked milton berle, but news is just incredibly worse now.
my daughters grew up without much tv---bad reception on 2 channels--and i think they are better for it than kids who got the full thing.
the grandmother who lived long enough for me to get to know her was born in yreka, ca in 1896. no cars. no tv. no radio. no airlines. no busses. she learned how to drive tho, and hauled a travel trailer all over the us and clear to nova scotia and deep in to mexico.
i agree with you. tv dominates our culture. and does a wretched job.
