I was going to make a joke but then I just felt weak all over and too sad to type.

It is disheartening.
Also disheartening, I have read that there is at least one TV series whose premise is a ticking bomb scenario, justifying extreme measures to prevent. The extreme measures apparently involve torture. I have never seen this show, called 24, which naturally was on Fox, maybe still is.
The Wikipedia article on this show is quite long, but only mentions as an aside that torture is a "recurring plot device."
Somehow that seems to me to be the most important thing about the series.
I don't know how popular this show is, but given that we have a government that does all it can to make the world a more dangerous place, and handmaiden TV networks to play up the dangers, I suspect that it is both popular and having a very bad effect on the American psyche.

I know which show you're talking about. Keifer Sutherland plays in it. I was aware that they use torture as a plot device, I too had the impression it was a central enticement, and have never watched the show either. I remember reading once, on some blog, that they had gotten a new female lead on the show and some of the men were dreamily looking forward to the prospect of her ending up in a torture situation. Which made me wonder how they might manage to sexualize it if it's typically male on male? Do they have some sex scene with some or other characters occurring before or after? Maybe they don't. Maybe they do. I don't want to bother myself with watching the show to find out.
The Wiki article does state that they portray torture as being effective.

perhaps the producers of 24 created, or edited, the wiki entry on their own show. lately we find that large corporations and the cia (!!!) have been editing wiki entries to suit their tastes. ahhhh. democracy in information. we'll vote on reality. and change the definition tomorrow.

24 is popular here in Trinidad. It plays on Friday nights at prime time. I watched an episode or two when it started, a series or two ago, and I find it despicable. Maybe it's entertainment to some, but not to me. I'm not at all surprised at the torture scenario.
