Social Sense

Gravatar Very well said.

Gravatar As much as I hate the concept of licensing everybody for everything, I am forced to point out that our society makes you get a license to cut hair, but that there is no system of quality assurance or supervision that ensures you will make a good parent before you are allowed to procreate.

We live in a nation that protects and even fosters bad decision making, so while I find this kind of tale somber and saddening, it isn't surprising at all.

Gravatar Mustang - your thoughts on this current young woman crossed my mind too. I just don't get this with parents. I had a friend who allowed her 16 yr old to go to Mexico for Spring break a couple years ago. I was agast and talked to her and asked the Mom/friend if she was aware of some of the dangers happening in Mexico with Americans. She was not aware but nonetheless allowed her to go. Thankfully, nothing happened but maybe today she might think differently.

Gravatar How much control should parents exert over an 18 year old, high school graduate? At what age should parents begin to trust their offspring? 21? 25? 30?

Ms. Holloway's disappearance on Aruba is tragic. But today such crimes happen on Saturday afternoons in mall parking lots and on Wednesday evenings after church choir practice. Such crimes have become sadly commonplace.

Yet, would any reasonable parent refuse to allow their 18 year old daughter to go to the mall or to church?

Ms. Holloway's parents did the best they could by ensuring that the trip was supervised by adults. There's a lot of blame to go around, but you only hold the parents responsible. Did the chaperones fulfill their duties? Did Ms. Holloway act responsibility by being out drinking at 2:00 AM? And what about the criminals who committed this crime against her? Shouldn't they share some of the blame?

Mustang, you talk about your anger. Think about Ms. Holloway's parents. They must be in utter torment over the disappearance of their daughter.

On top of that anguish, you point a finger at them and claim, it's all their fault.

Man ... that's cold.
