from 2nd link:
"In my opinion, you have to first define the problem in order to find the solution. Defining the problem as Islamic terrorism or extremism is incorrect; the problem is in fact political Islam."
"Western governments have basically been supporting political Islam for some twenty to thirty years now, including the Taliban vis-à-vis the former Soviet Union. They created the climate for the problems we are faced with today. Political Islam rose to power when Western powers supported Khomeini against the Shah in order to control and in fact defeat the revolution in Iran. These are the roots of the political Islam that we see today. And that is only one aspect of the reality we are faced with."

northanger - etalia link is a lot more rational than most of the marxist ranting I've heard recently, but I'm not in the mood to wade into this swamp now. Marxism has rigorously demolished several times over - anyone interested should know that. I'll rehearse a few of the most elegant refutations in June. If you're impatient read:
Boehm Bawerk (deals with Scruggs' 'lump of capital' issue. Utterly devastating refounding of capital theory, based on peerless understanding of Marx (well, perhaps equalled by Schumpeter))
Karl Witfogel (shows why soci*lism is essentially regressive and despotic)
Deleuze/Guattari (highly obscure, but 'surplus value of code' disintegrates labour theory of value and thus guts the entire Marxian project)
Schumpeter (His Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy is a masterpiece of sensitive yet relentless critique, if anything too generous though)
Braudel (bizarro French vision of capital (see also D&G above) but still rips Karl a new one)
For neatest arithmetical argument, google 'transformation problem' - it's an absolute knock-down of the entire Marxian edifice, extremely clear cut, and best still - Marx knew it himself (hence Capital peters out into sad embers, an uncompletable abortion of a book - but unfortunately it still suffices for arts students in search of an updated European monotheism).

A few of the big issues Marxism is structurally incapable of dealing with coherently:
1) Economic incentives. (Every 'Marxist' regime ends up re-introducing capitalist mechanisms at some point, since the only authentically soci*list option is moral exhortation, backed inevitably with terror)
2) Saving. Special case of #1. Since returns on capital are defined as exploitation, why the hell would anybody save? At gunpoint of course (or State-capitalism, well duh)
3) Intellectual property. Defined as a form of crooked practice by Karl. Again, special case of #1, any economic incentive to innovation strangled at birth.
4) Entropy dissipation. How to clear the crap out of any social system, given that competition is verboten? Better reach for those guns again, and trust cynical bureucrats to aim them at the right people.
5) Cultural difference. Karl's (only) line: 'Imperialize the brutes' then direct them onto the neo-Christian eschatology conveyor-belt - straight to soci*lism.
6) Equity markets, corporate governance and the agency problem. All too complicated - let's just imagine plutocrat manager-owners smoking big cigars.
7) The entrepreneurial function. See #6 above or wibble on about primitive accumulation.
8) Financial markets. Typical monotheistic allergy to 'usury' and total blindness as regards even the basic arithmetical characteristics of capital markets. Given the master work is called 'Capital' the unbelievable poverty of analysis in this respect is simply mind-bending.
9) Artificial intelligence. Robots pre-defined as part of the capital stock, producing no value but merely conditions for utilization of (human) variable capital. Thus AI impossible in principle.

northanger--agree with nick to some degree that K Punk's rendition of l'Internationale is not that much better than Arpege Chabert's or Mr. Tomb's. In fact, it's worse, because he's doing Old Fart 'final journalism word' a la blogosphere on the case, but that makes them all link to him like he was some evangelist or something. He says what's interesting is her misunderstanding of Marx, but that isn't interesting at all, even though he is right to say that she is like a caricature of what the right thinks of the left.
Mais non! What is interesting is that yet new publicity for this hilarious stripper straight from the Minsky Runway (I bet she's got ancestors who broke in Gypsy Rose Lee--I mean we are talking about LEWD...)has been promulgated so that the Arpege Chabert Legend has lived on for 2 whole weeks. I just got back from walking in the clear cold up in 37th and 39th Streets. I am simply ASTONISHED that all the ribbon and trimming stores are still there--it's fabulous. And you can stand and look up and see real offices with real clothing machines and real clothes racks in the same showrooms Jerome Weidman was writing about back in the 30's and 40's, and there are real yarmulkahs on real Chasidim, although there are more in the diamond district...

nick - useful list of authors and problems with marx. looking at amazon one would think that schumpeter wasn't a reliable source for a decent perspective; as one reader wrote: "Marx was a dangerous idiot and the fact that Schumeter heaps measured praise on him suggests that Schumpeter should also join him in the intellectual trash can of history." another wrote: "Marx was a dangerous idiot and the fact that Schumeter heaps measured praise on him suggests that Schumpeter should also join him in the intellectual trash can of history." of course one person's view doesn't amount to much but schumpeter does seem to get a bit of flack. ... incidentally for those who are interested in Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk, the complete text of The Positive Theory of Capital is online: http://www.econlib.org/library/B...werk/

tachi - As I said, if Schumpeter errs it is through generosity - he constructs the best possible case for soci*lism, but his analysis is always economically literate, incisive and informative. CSD was published in the 1940s when collectivist ideas were still in vogue (as they remained until 1980) so his pessimism about the future of capitalism was not entirely irrational. He sees it partly being subverted by disgruntled rabble-rousing intellectuals who can't forgive the market economy for dethroning philosopher kings and deromanticizing society (his discussion of intellectuals and their affinity with the left is absolutely fascinating - a neglected topic IMHO). He also thinks increasing bureaucratization will eradicate the entrepreneurial function - again, not an unreasonable prospect for the time, or indeed until the return of market-oriented ideas from the late 1970s.

Let me rephrase that...of course not all criticisms of capitalism are Marxist (markets vs. anti-markets; anarchists r. and l.; left libertarians, etc.).
Increasingly think the interesting ground is to be found between what entities like The Economist find to criticise in governments, and gvt economic/foreign policies themselves - and that the only way to understand the 'motivations' and 'incentives' that Nick thinks are done away with under communism (one could talk here of constructivism & modernism, but know this won't suffice) - is to realise what it is that's desired against the ossification of state restrictions, national idiocyncrisies, etc.

traxus4420 - I share K-punk's delight in the Lyotard of Libidinal Economy, but obviously "The ethical impulse to replace capitalism" and demand that capitalism "be destroyed" (both entirely extraneous to the Lyotard text btw) are key differentiators. I'd put it as crudely as the 'right track/wrong track' question on US opinion polls - K-punk appears to think capitalism is an obstacle to whatever he's seeing, I see it as the only pathway to anything interesting.
As an aside, the 'reform' issue is also indicative. K-punk seems to interpret it as involving attempts to make capitalism 'nicer' (which he understandably derides). I see it as an attempt to bring capitalism closer to its inherent potential - in other words, to intensify the process and accelerate growth (this is the sense in which economists/governments use it today, whereas when collectivist ideas were more popular the K-punk meaning was more prevalent. In its current sense, of course, I affirm the idea of reform (short for 'market-oriented economic reforms) in the strongest possible terms).
Nick |
03.22.06 - 2:31 am | #

infinite thought - if anticapitalism is more than an empty slogan it makes extreme theoretical demands. Because the essence of capitalism is spontaneity (unplanned distributed responses to economic incentives) "destroying" it requires either a preliminary and absolutely radical change in human nature (one that would render people oblivious to economic incentives) or a quite fantastically totalitarian sociopolitical apparatus capable of policing the minutiae of human behaviour to eradicate 'capitalist' activities at source - Maoism remains the best historical example of such programmes in practice (the attempt to forge a 'blank-slate' new socialist humanity and - when that failed - to root out any hint of profit-maxmizing behaviour through repeated waves of totalitarian social campaigning).
Not sure I'm getting your second point.

Chinese Susan Sontags and Bernard-Henri Levys start popping up all over Shanghai--and you ought to have even more of these types than we do, because Chinese are by nature able to require less space for self-realization and useless textual proliferation than Westerners. Serves you right.
Los Angeles has the broadest range--you get literally every degree between the furthest extremes. I love it, and would move there if I had some kind of life like I do here. New York used to have that, and there's still a huge lot, but there's a big streak of London in it as of the last 15 years. Dallas is not a really BIG metropolis, even though you could probably find more people who wouldn't pester you with argument than in L.A., where you'll find both--that's the best to me.

Elsewhere, all Amurricans have lost touch except for the Bush administration who are, as usual, acing everything with ossified brain matter and National Honor Society ('we will live up to the high ideals of this society') speeches. It's only been a week since Allawi changed it from 'is Iraq sliding into CW?' to 'Iraq is already in CW' but the administration says Iraqis made a hard choice not to slide into CW, so what you see on CNN is not true but is just to help Al-Qaeda.
In liberal news, Hilary Clinton lost Susan Sarandon as a supporter. Sarandon says can't forgive her pro-war vote, which makes it seem like she's been asleep for over 3 years. Overrated as actress anyway--truly drear in 'the Hunger' with Mme. Deneuve.

Friggin' haloscan may pick up my comment, will quickly say since late that I'd said that Deneuve so outshone Sarandon and the ending so stupidly changed from Streiber's novel, the only good vampire novel I've read (not an aficionado, but the Anne Rice stuff is sickening to me). Streiber knows how to let the sinister and evil triumph in a horror film, so that the Deneuve character does succeed, and gets the Sarandon back in the coffin, never to let her threaten Vampire Welfare again (visits her often though). Kubrick's adaptation of 'the Shining' does the same thing: In King's book, the evil house is blown up and Scatman Crothers and the mother and son are at some little bucolic moment at the end. Kubrick kills off Crothers in the house, and the mother and son escape by the skin of their teeth, but the whole operation is left intact (you can imagine they will then have a future of psychosis). King hated this, and remade TV movie with BS childish ending.
Stone good in 'Casino' because magnificent body and slightly coarse face perfect for Vegas. Know nothing about her personally, but Hollywood limousine liberal is a long tradition.

Nick--yeah, probably not clear, but Kubrick took the material and made the ending so that the evil house still was left intact and had power, which it had just been blown up like some 4th of July celebration in the novel. It was the opposite of what happened in 'The Hunger', where the novel left evil Catherine Deneuve, a 2000-year-old vampire (very singularity...), in full control once Ms. Sarandon had gotten too demanding of Vampire Rights (this is after the poor David Bowie vampire, a minor vampire of only about 200-300 years, got upset that he wasn't going to get to live indefinitely like Deneuve was. So, in fact, he did then starve.)
So, my point is really just that a horror tale is far more powerful if there is the possibility that good might prevail against evil, but that it should ultimately fail to do so, because the horror lingers in a much more powerful way with the viewer if the essential evil is still potent at the end. You walk out of the theater and don't get relief, at least for awhile, because didn't care about reassuring you against Vile Bodies and Babies (as in Rosemary's), instead of providing Baubles, Bangles and Beads. That's why the escape of the Shelley Duvall character and son in the film of 'The Shining' but leaving the sinister house still functioning without a single witness to back them up; and preserving the Vampire Status Quo and/or Ancien Regime in the novel of 'The Hunger' are so much more powerful than their sell-out counterparts. I'm not talking about real life, just that horror fictions are useless unless the horror prevails at least in some works.
Who needs Crothers, Duvall, and 'Little Boy' doing a burbling brook scene at the end of a horror epic? I had to read the whole 400 pages because a friend told me I was an idiot, so proof became necessary (naturally, he didn't want to hear it, since I still disagreed.)

Also, Sarandon on the London balcony is not very lesbovampiric, because Deneuve has already been thrown down a staircase in stupid Grand Guignol fashion. If it were Deneuve doing half a lesbovampiric, it could have stilled been erotic, because she always has hints of aberrations in her face. (of course, such detailing may not be turbo, but everybody needs something on the side...)

puff adder - need to do some movie re-viewing to respond, but confident I'm getting it now (there's a Stephen King discussion up the line - how does a writer so fundementally flawed get to occupy this position in popular culture? - genuinely interesting question from any PoV, don't you think?)

Nick--would be interesting, because I don't know much about him. That's the only thing I've read. One other thing about the Anne Rice person: maybe 10 years ago there was this NYTMag interview, and she exclaimed 'I simply cannot BEAR it when people don't think of me as a serious writer!' I thought that was hilarious.

Venus In Microsoft: male mas(s)ochism and cybernetics (Stephen Pfohl)
One evening as the moon is waning radon I spy the telematic form of a blonde on blonde goddess at the cinema. Maybe I'm s/he. Her filmic body ablaze to my projective pleasure; her bare legs sex lips ass open to the always only partially visible "ends of Man." For the price of a ticket I get to participate in a dreamy bending of industrial taboos escaping HIStory. I feel at once anxious and numb. This is fascinating. I watch myself watching myself watching my fantasies while watching my fantasies watching myself. This is true. Just look at the statistics.
At the film's climax a stoney cold Goddess dressed in nothing but furs stands transfigured as a blank-faced male double showers her with spurts of white liquid CAPITAL. Maybe I'm s/he. I am transferred into the microsoft: aroused and electric. This is my body ? a telematic exchange of faith leaping screen to screen. This is whitemale techno-magic. This is obscene. This is fascinating. The next thing I know they're strapping me into a cockpit and blind-folding me with information. "Baghdad's your target," I hear a white man in black face saying. These are my orders. "Jack off as often as you want. Nobody will say; nobody will see; nobody will smell a thing."

nick. longsunday discussing Tronti's The Strategy of the Refusal:
Capitalist power seeks to use the workers' antagonistic will-to-struggle as a motor of its own development. The workerist party must take this same real mediation by the workers of capital's interests and organise it in an antagonistic form, as the tactical terrain of struggle and as a strategic potential for destruction. Here there is only one reference point - only one orientation - for the opposed world views of the two classes - namely the class of workers. Whether one's aim is to stabilise the development of the system or to destroy it forever, it is the working class that is decisive. Thus the society of capital and the workers' party find themselves existing as two opposite forms with one and the same content. And in the struggle for that content, the one form excludes the 'other. They can only exist together for the brief period of the revolutionary crisis.
is this on track with capitalism's "inherent potential" to intensify the process and accelerate growth?
