I see the antiwar position as following the Chomsky-esque "self-defeating logic" he perfected in his writings on the post-Vietnam Communist massacre of Cambodians (as noted by Berman). Something like:
1. There is no credible threat to the Western world.
2. If there is a credible threat (and even the antiwar set must concede that there is), then it is caused by our foreign policy interventions.
3. In any case the West is mired in hypocrisy and doesn't deserve to win the war which might or might not be occuring, even if are enemies are fascist reactionaries (which they're not, so there).

dlp - I think that I can point you to a few sane leftists or post-leftists who oppose Islamism on "left principles" and who understand not only the terrorist threat but also the alliance between the jihadis and their useful idiots (who are, after all, not only on the left): Christopher Hitchens, David Aaronovitch, Paul Berman, Nick Cohen, Norman Geras, Oliver Kamm, the Harry's Place blog, the Euston Manifesto signees, etc. Unfortunately, they're all marginal figures to the rest of left at best, though.

Hmm, I admit that that's not necessarily good support for my argument. I've always felt that Berman writes from the left ("...I was writing some of the most classically left-wing journalism (in my own eyes) to come out of Nicaragua – I was talking to workers' organisations and telling the story from their point of view.") according to (democratic) left principles, even if the left isn't really intersted in him or his "pro-Israeli propaganda".

this whole question of the 'decent left' (as I think it's called) is an interesting one to me. They're in an unenviable position, given that in the highly polarized WWIV political climate they have to either
