Slightly off topic and maybe a bit inane, but I love Ralph Peters for his erratic-ness - the man is bonkers.

Gravatar I've got a strange affection for him too, even when he's being bat-shit insane (not an especially uncommon occurrence). And at his best he's stupendous.

This also (VDH latest) highly germane:
http://www.frontpagemag.com/Arti...le.asp? ID=25938

Gravatar Nick - think that you're onto something re the leftist mindset. Perhaps it would help to try and nail it down for the purposes of this discussion?

Gravatar I see the antiwar position as following the Chomsky-esque "self-defeating logic" he perfected in his writings on the post-Vietnam Communist massacre of Cambodians (as noted by Berman). Something like:
1. There is no credible threat to the Western world.
2. If there is a credible threat (and even the antiwar set must concede that there is), then it is caused by our foreign policy interventions.
3. In any case the West is mired in hypocrisy and doesn't deserve to win the war which might or might not be occuring, even if are enemies are fascist reactionaries (which they're not, so there).

Gravatar Good article on "Von Kriege"

Gravatar I find any notion of a sane left as highly dubious. But this post over at the brilliant Gates of Vienna blog (where the highly stimulatiing Fjordman posts) actually entertains the possibility of an alliance between leftists and rightists:

http:// gatesofvienna.blogspot.co...barricades.html

... are there really 'leftists' that understand the Jihadi threat in all its complexity - including the complicity of Eurabian politricks - that also believe in equality of outcomes, US as evil empire etc as Nick so rightly pointed out as their defining features?

There seems to be a need to define what separates political movements in terms of their understanding of the enemy, rather than concept of the role of government, though this obviously belies a more fundamental understanding of how politics functions. Real libertarians need to be totally ruthless. To the point that a hefty amount of sacrifice is in order. Which is where Clauswitzian all out war comes in.

Gravatar More interesting stuff here and here

Gravatar dlp - I think that I can point you to a few sane leftists or post-leftists who oppose Islamism on "left principles" and who understand not only the terrorist threat but also the alliance between the jihadis and their useful idiots (who are, after all, not only on the left): Christopher Hitchens, David Aaronovitch, Paul Berman, Nick Cohen, Norman Geras, Oliver Kamm, the Harry's Place blog, the Euston Manifesto signees, etc. Unfortunately, they're all marginal figures to the rest of left at best, though.

Gravatar I concede that it's hardly much of a movement though, let alone one with any sort of critical mass.

Gravatar Anyone that acknowledges the existence of Eurabia cannot seriously be a leftist, surely? Berman is good on Qutb, I don't see what remains of his leftism ... maybe you can elucidate Tim?

Gravatar Berman has spoke in several interviews of his education in anti-Stalinist anarchist & left wing politics. For instance:

"What drew me to that milieu [New York, working class Anarchism] was a revulsion against the Leninist passions that were claiming so much of the New Left. I always thought of the New Left as an anti-authoritarian movement, and suddenly here were too many of my friends and comrades drifting in ever more authoritarian directions. The old-time anarchists, on the other hand, exuded a natural spirit and culture that was inherently libertarian. The Anarchists entertained a very thorough critique of Communism. They had a whole literature on the Soviet Union and a criticism of Communism that was at once philosophical and practical. A very bitter literature. There was also, in New York, beginning in the 1960s, a serious anarchist criticism of Castro, which came from the exiled Cuban Anarchists in Argentina and even in Miami, who had their newspapers. These writings were taken very seriously by some people in New York. In the old anarchist circles, you could learn about the firing squads and the prisons."

http://www.democratiya.com/inter...w.asp? issueid=5

Gravatar Hmm, I admit that that's not necessarily good support for my argument. I've always felt that Berman writes from the left ("...I was writing some of the most classically left-wing journalism (in my own eyes) to come out of Nicaragua – I was talking to workers' organisations and telling the story from their point of view.") according to (democratic) left principles, even if the left isn't really intersted in him or his "pro-Israeli propaganda".

I'm not sure that I've ever read anything by Berman about Eurabia - have you got any good links?

Gravatar this whole question of the 'decent left' (as I think it's called) is an interesting one to me. They're in an unenviable position, given that in the highly polarized WWIV political climate they have to either
a) ally themselves with rightwingers who they despise, while admitting they're at least not totalitarian freaks (surely Churchill got left support in WWII of this kind), or
b) try to turn around the supertanker of objectively theofascist leftism from within (while inevitably strengthening it through their reluctant but residual identification) - these (b) guys are simply enemies IMHO, even if pathetic ones whose predicament elicits sympathy

In the final analysis, anyone who opposes global jihad has a place among the internal controversies of civilization, however boisterous and even ill-tempered they might get, while anyone who supports it is an enemy to be eradicated without pity.

Gravatar How can we acheive the kind of bipartisan consensus mooted at Gates of Vienna? Will it necessarily take the nuclear destruction of a European or American City before the West wakes up to the threat of Islamism? Perhaps the kind of war we are fighting necessarily includes this problem - i.e. our relatively low body count (compared a la VDH to WWII) kind of encourages this "we're not in danger, everything is normal, apart from some mildly alarming stuff on the telly" thinking.

Gravatar nick. scrape off lefty-righty crap, the USA is hegemonic. imperialism ... maybe not. a hegemony seeks to dominate its space, whether its a nation or a group of cheerleaders. if we're going to critique the intellectual elite, then we'd also need to critique a bunch of other stuff in the process.

Gravatar if the assumption is the lefties get the "butcher's bill", you must be mad. as usual. the issue with 9/11 isn't what the intellectual left was/is thinking, but why 9/11 happened in the first place.

Gravatar i'm happy to rephrase this as often as possible: the issue with 9/11 isn't what the intellectual right was/is thinking, but why 9/11 happened in the first place.

Gravatar Great article Nick - neatly ties in with the Clausewitz and WWIV article I linked to in AFJ. Obviously our militaries need to step up to the plate, as it were - technology (both of the physical, cool weapons and vehicles type, and the abstract technology of reified theory, strategy and tactics ("social scientists war") type) connecting the grunt on the ground with a knowledge network, a communications network, and a weapons network? Maybe some kind of flesh-ware internet/skynet interface - or is that too WWIII?

Gravatar Nick - I'm currently trying to build up a bit of a holiday reading list, are there any good authors/books on Marxian economics and associated conundrums that you could recommend?

Gravatar tim - slightly off the directly Marx-related line, two absolutely superb, lucid and highly influential economics works that I would strongly recommend are:
1) Hernando de Soto, The Mystery of Capital
2) Virginia Postrel, The Future and its Enemies

Gravatar tim - if you're interested in Eurabia, the must-read is Bat Y'eor, Eurabia: The Euro-Arab Axis. Here is an interview: http://www.frontpagemag.com/Arti...le.asp? ID=15044

Gravatar Bat Ye'or - hmm... I think she's overstating the case somewhat (and don't bring up Oriana Fallaci on the subject of Muslims, for god's sake). I'm not sure that I believe in a "Euro-Arab governmental conspiracy" taking us all down the path of enslavement to Islam, but there were some interesting observations in the interview and clearly she has indentified worrying trends in Europe, at the very least.

Gravatar Bat Ye'or - hmm... I think she's overstating the case somewhat (and don't bring up Oriana Fallaci on the subject of Muslims, for god's sake). Gravatar Why does that keep happening to me? Cursed bloody technology...

Gravatar The Bat Ye'or thesis definitely needs thrashing through some time.
I'd be tempted to dismiss it as paranoia too, if it wasn't for the transcendental (boundless and self-immolating) evil of the French.

Gravatar Thought this was telling:

FP: What have you to say about the French journalists taken hostage and France's reactions?

Bat Ye'or: Chirac hoped that they would be liberated as a favor to French Arabophile and pro-Palestinian militancy, a dhimmi service for Arab policy that deserves a favor not granted to others. This tragedy has revealed France's good relations with terrorist organizations such as Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah and others. It has also uncovered France's dependency on its considerable Muslim population for its home and foreign policies, as it appeared earlier that their advocacy would determine the liberation of the hostages. But the incredible conditions subsequently put by the terrorists prove that Islamist terrorists apply the same rules to all infidels. It also demonstrates the inanity of a policy of collusion and denial that has always whitewashed Islamic terrorism to avoid confronting it and has constantly transferred its evils onto its victims.

Gravatar I'm not sure if Europe is going to need any help self-destructing in any case, purely on economic terms.

Gravatar tim - but as sd kept reminding me, 'Europe' is rather sweeping as a category (the Estonians seem to be doing good stuff, for e.g.).
I think Rumsfeld's "Old Europe" was pretty good (Frankenreich Antisemitic Statism).

Gravatar ['good' as a term, of course, indescribably hideous as an entity (one only needs to recall Scroeder or Chirac to immediately understand why Dresden needed flattening)]

Gravatar Ah ok - agreed: "Old Europe" is a bit clearer.

Gravatar Think my slippage of terms indicates some not quite dead Western chauvanism!

Gravatar ... it's not as if I'm promising to desist from all future 'Europe' rants btw :)

Gravatar Bat Ye'or = using circumstantial evidence to connect the dots. sounds black box. imho, her process should be evaluated first.

Gravatar RE: Peters

[1] did he read the whole thing? btw, (via):

COUNTERINSURGENCY (pdf)

[2] So the doctrine writers faked it, treating all insurgencies as political. As a result, they prescribed an excellent head-cold treatment—for a cancer patient. The text is a mush of pop-zen mantras such as "Sometimes doing nothing is the best reaction"...

Sometimes Doing Nothing Is the Best Reaction :: 1-152. Often insurgents carry out a terrorist act or guerrilla raid with the primary purpose of enticing counterinsurgents to overreact, or at least to react in a way that insurgents can exploit—for example, opening fire on a crowd or executing a clearing operation that creates more enemies than it takes off the streets. If an assessment of the effects of a course of action determines that more negative than positive effects may result, an alternative should be considered—potentially including not acting.

Gravatar [3] think this is key:
A counterinsurgency campaign is, as described in this manual, a mix of offensive, defensive, and stability operations conducted along multiple lines of operations. It requires Soldiers and Marines to employ a mix of familiar combat tasks and skills more often associated with nonmilitary agencies. The balance between them depends on the local situation. Achieving this balance is not easy. It requires leaders at all levels to adjust their approach constantly. They must ensure that their Soldiers and Marines are ready to be greeted with either a handshake or a hand grenade while taking on missions only infrequently practiced until recently at our combat training centers. Soldiers and Marines are expected to be nation builders as well as warriors.
- - - -

the American soldier is not trained to just shoot-to-kill. if he were, maybe Peters' "criticism" would make better sense. imho, he doesn't provide adequate analysis. his piece is a tad "sensational" & sounds like a rant (about what i don't know).

peace & love can look differently depending on what side of the line you're on. maybe a way to perceive one another is to accept how we feel about one another & take our emotions as ... well, gifts {shrug}. so when somebody really really really irks you, put peace in one hand, love in the other hand & what irks you in the middle. like a 'smores or an oreo cookie. when you step back to your side of the line & look at the connection there's peace, love &....understanding. this sounds so extremely idiotic & stoopid that i just know it'll work. because that way, at least we keep connected with one another until we figure things out. when we do figure things out i know all that irky gunk in the middle turns to pure gold. then we'll all know the power of peace.love.understanding.

Gravatar he posts twice on a (22c) thread about orgone accumulators, here´s the first:

This is the best quote: it may very well be that these people are simply turd-toying nut balls only driving themselves further down the rabbit hole by huffing neurotoxic gas as a means to fight the lizard people.

Yeah -- I mean James DeMeo's article "How to build a cloud buster" doesn't tell you jack shit how to build anything! All it says is aluminum and copper are bad and that you use pipes.

THAT'S IT -- out of pages and pages about people going into trances and leaving the cloudbusters going to create all sorts of problems, etc. Anecdote after anecdote of "I built the cloudbuster" and then....

Holy shit! "How to" means -- references of operational problems with no information how to....

What has America come to? haha.

James DeMeo just wants people to buy into his little Reich cult (well you need to do all the orgone training and somewhere how, somewhere you'll find out)...

Yeah whatever Reich thought that masturbation would save Earth -- what a joke -- it justs turns men into sex-addicts with bad health and dead brains.

Gravatar last hempel quote:

I like how Paglia points how that when Jackie Kennedy got a new hat birds started going extinct because all the women had to have these pretty feathers -- well maybe it wasn't from her but Paglia does state that

fur jackets are an extension of vaginal hair.

Anyway -- New York City was largely built by the wealth of Jacob Astor obtained from getting Indians Drunk so they would treat animals as commodity fetishes (not a spiritual equals) and therefore enable women in Europe to wrap themselves in sex magic garments.

Gravatar paglia probably would have no problem confusing an article jackie o wrote for the New York Times Magazine when she was an editor at Viking Press. The article was about the silly Diana Vreeland, who worked withn the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Vreeland did nothing but fatuous party talk and had the Hag Face to go with it while she praised her own 'ultimate personal style'. Anyway, Jackie was writing about Vreeland talking about Parisian women getting hats made of Birds of Paradise feathers, which has long been illegal. Of course, Vreeland was lamenting this in her hateful decadent way. She even demanded that her cash be only new, or if not, then ironed and folded properly. Another of these New York Hags, Nan Kempner, died last year. I saw her once at a fashion show where I had a temp job selling tickets and she went there to see if they were maintaining her own exhibited dresses properly; she was dressed like some ridiculous circus clown. Kempner loved to have Henry Kissinger as a dinner guest, or 'anybody chic.' I'm glad these 2 hags (Vreeland and Kempner) have left no imitators behind, as they are not one of the endangered species I'm worried about. I don't trust Paglia all that much either though.

Gravatar piet - thanks for the DH link, it started off seeming quite interesting, if rather chaotically presented, but by the end of the thread it had just deteriorated into something bonkers and erroneous, so I'm not especially driven to follow it further ....

Gravatar Lying about Jihad

"We smile in the face of some people although our hearts curse them." - Abu Ad-Darda

Gravatar Academic Jihad in the West

"When historians analyze the War on Terror in the near future, they will most likely look back at the war of ideas preceding 9/11 and understand the role academia played as a central battlefield leading to the weakening and defeat of the country, before it rose back in resistance. For if the fields of foreign policy, regional studies and international relations teaching—the most sensitive feeders for security and defense decision-making—were obsolete in identifying the “enemy,” all that is left to national security is the last shield, which is the hope that intelligence and counterterrorism sensors can catch the raiders at the doors or beyond the gates. And that’s what didn’t occur in 1993, 1998 and 2001.The terror offensive against America was preceded by a War of Ideas, blurring the eyes of the nation."

Gravatar tim - phares is one of my favourites. future jihad was a hugely significant book for me. he's recieved a good scathing by amy walden though; i can dig it out later when back home. y'eor is the eurabia key though. berlinski's menace in europe well worth a read too, though less systematic. happy 2007!

Gravatar More From Iraq

Gravatar hi nick.

Gravatar http://mailman.lbo-talk.org/pipe...218/ 025389.html Marvin

If you have access to today's Wall Street Journal, I recommend an op-ed
piece by Abraham Sofaer as an good illustration of the differences at the
top. Sofaer is a former legal advisor to the State Department who negotiated
with Iran on behalf of the Reagan and Bush Sr. administrations. You should
take careful note of his succinct, if somewhat chilling, concluding reminder that US objectives are better pursued through "affordable wars of
destruction instead of costly nation-building exercises." He means reliance on the use, or threat, to destroy infrastructure from above through the massive use of air power. Sofaer, like other members of the US political establishment, has a good grasp - better than your own and some others on the list - of what Iraq has cost and is continuing to cost, and why the US needs to cut its losses there as quickly and as expeditiously as possible so it can get on with properly maintaining the empire in a more cost-efficient way. It is always about cost, isn't it? http://online.wsj.com/article/ SB...in_commentaries

"I chose to use the name primarily because of my predisposition to use it in the first place. It is something that I made up without any specific relevance or connections to other things (as opposed to keirr which was a derivative from a storyline I created). It is also a familiar word because it is a hybrid between the words hyper and superstition (most likely obvious)."

Gravatar IT's slowly creeping back ...
"capitalism.net" - that site name just made my day

new thread soon - honest!

Gravatar yes, tim, ++ thanks for Reisman, if it gets within a lightyear of its own hype-machine it's going to be a lifetime of infernal delight (the hype alone has my dopamine levels zapping through the roof)

Gravatar nicky. i'm sure you're happy to hear that comets are "harbingers of doom". or so they say. comet C/2006 P1 (McNaught) has closest approach to sun on 13-Jan & could possibly be seen in broad daylight. still working on details.

Gravatar so do plan your new thread accordingly, yadda blah blah.

Vysparov's code for 'Cluster Type Zero'
Bit rusty on all this, but it's quite an intriguing piece of numbo-jumbo (enthusiastically pursued by Mme Centauri) designed to ensure cross-mapping between Lemurian demonism and the modern playing card pack - extremely useful for amateur occultism (esp. parlour cartomancy)

Gravatar nick. thanks.

GON -10 = CLUSTER TYPE = THE SPOILS OF WAR.

GON -18 = CLUSTER TYPE ZERO.

Gravatar GON 24 = PARLOUR CARTOMANCY || GON -24 = ZULU.
