Gravatar Nick - do you really think Cameron is despicable and not merely boringly pathetic? I, personally, can't give him that much credit. The crushing inevitability (for years) of a Conservative Blair only adds to that feeling. This was why I thought of Obama - the prophesied golden child who turns out to be a moron. Agree with your blue-blood argument though.

Gravatar Aanyone read Nassim Nicholas Taleb's new book, The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable, yet? Seems very interesting from the point of view of the centrality of narrative (thinking back to Nick's discussions with binky about the nature of hyperstition, somewhere in the depths of the archives). There's a relevant Freakonomics post here:
http://www.freakonomics.com/blog...the-black-swan/

Gravatar (I may be duplicating, because Haloscan is not working, so this will make it a 'different post' instead of an 'I've already said that' one.)

'not sure America can quite do that vacuous, condescending aristocratic git thing, but if anybody gets close, its Edwards rather than Obama (given that lawyers are the closest US gets to blue-bloods, and Edwards is a spoilt, pandering, ambulance-chasing parasite)"

Interesting how British you still are (no offense, I have nothing against it even if you do). I've even heard hard-left Marxists go this route when they think it might be useful, although I know you wouldn't do it in that sense. Sure, we don't have a good Ethelbehrt going back into the mists of the Alqonquins and Mohawks--but Edwards being somehow comparable is a little Hyperstitional in some sort of sense or other--given that in a mere generation he has apparently gone from poor Southern white-trash to spoilt ambulance-chasing parasite. Every time this argument is used, it always comes with a disclaimer about the 'condescending and vacuous' nature of the aristocracy, very little different from Good Queen Bess II's assessment of some duke as 'much too grand for us.' I am quite tired of hearing it, because it is even inaccurate, there is a such thing as 'young aristocracies'...of course, I'd never actually be proud of such an odious and vacuous thing...and they have existed noteworthily in Boston, New York, New Orleans, Houston, and even generations of Otises and Chandlers in Los Angeles. There's a such thing as 'old money' in New York and Boston, and George H.W. Bush is Old Money American Aristocracy, it's his son who learned how to get elected while also doing the downwardly mobile cracker-talk good-ole-boy number.

The Old Boy Network is full of Cheneys, Rumsfelds, Warren Christophers, Kissingers, Kennedys, you name it among Republicans and Democrats.

That's beside the point though. Lawyers are almost everybody who manages to get 'up there' in politics here, whether Bill and Hillary, Giuliani, Spitzer, all the smart ones. It would NOT have hurt if Bush could have seen fit to at least enter law school, and even if he did get through Harvard Business School, we don't have any reason to believe that required studying or passing courses. He is himself an ambulance-chasing parasite, and has proved it innumerable times!

Gravatar "So far as I can make out -- I am not writing from Iraq, but I do make a splendid effort to follow the plot there -- "

Yeah, and that's why you're not worth listening to, and John Burns is.

Gravatar "let's just keep fighting until we win. "

Ev'body jes' listen up to Warren.

The new era of Pep Talks. I mean..it's just a matter of something like School Spirit. Mistah Petraeus comes in, and everybody knows they're a potential corpse, so due to glamour deprivation, somehow everybody sees in Petraeus all the John Wayne leadership that none of the other infuriated and disgusted generals had.

Ye-yuh, uh-huh...

Gravatar tim, troll-prime - think from different directions you're each suggesting that twisted Brit class-hatred could be clouding my judgment, and you're probably both right, but
1) Edwards is an ambulance-chaser's ambulance chaser - the guy made his fortune out of concocting spurious grievances against medical professionals, thus by profound irony exemplifying exactly how the dysfunctions in the system he now exploits for political purpose arose in the first place. (Many more reasons to loathe this scumbag, best left for later ...)
2) Cameron -- unlike Obama -- has lived a supremely privileged life, and from it has drawn not one speck of solid character, but only facile charm and ambition based upon a quite staggering absence of principle. Sticking to a comfortable life he would indeed be a merely pathetic fop, but as a man with the supreme insolence to project himself as a potential national leader based on nothing at all beyond a "winning smile" he crosses a line -- in my head anyway (but then, that might just be the class-hatred talking)

as to David Warren, I can see how he'd be annoying from certain perspectives, but substantively he's correct IMHO, and his analysis of the implications of a US retreat are hugely more thought-through than the "get out, get out, it's Vietnam!" crowd.
If Iraq is judged 'impossible' then the Arab world has succeeded in immunizing itself from Western meddling, which the western anti-imperialist fraternity will no doubt applaud to the skies, while strategically ignoring the fact the whole region is a soon-to-be nuked up terror factory and financing complex, whose principal export is destined to be dead infidels

Gravatar crypto-pachydermic loose end handled.

Gravatar Given the wild mood-swings and general flakiness of US public opinion (and I'm not picking on America, of course, it's much worse everywhere else) a cavalier dismissal of "Pep Talks" seems hard to justify.

Gravatar The Obama plan:
http://tank.nationalreview.com/ p...GViZmZlZGZiMTI=

Gravatar "Given the wild mood-swings and general flakiness of US public opinion (and I'm not picking on America,"

yes, you are, make up your mind. You know that the public is interested in itself, not the things that distant observers of the spectacle are concerned with. As for the Pep Talks, that's all Bush/Cheney have left, the scumbags (you use that sort of language, so I suppose I will too.) The onus is on THEM to prove something. They have given the American public no reason whatever to trust them, so let them fucking PROVE something. You don't think people would pay attention? You don't think that they might like something besides the absolute dishonesty and totally impotent and disastrous result they've been shown and told to worship? Well, like I said, we just wait and see. That's why Burns is trying to cover as many possibilities as he humanly can, and being in Iraq is the only way you can know about what's happening in Iraq, and that also means you can't have the overview of the whole Mideast matters, including all the rest of the nations, as well as you can have of Iraq. And Burns knows it's changing daily.

Gravatar "Edwards is an ambulance-chaser's ambulance chaser - the guy made his fortune out of concocting spurious grievances against medical professionals, thus by profound irony exemplifying exactly how the dysfunctions in the system he now exploits for political purpose arose in the first place. "

This is not the least bit impressive. Your mentor Dick Cheney concocted in total awareness of its spuriousness, endless crocks of shit about WMD and Al Qaeda connections to Iraq, which did not exist in any way, shape or form before 2004, or at earliest 2003. Don't expect ANY successful politician to promise you a rose garden, because they are not interested in them. Even Obama is a decent fellow, I have nothing against him, he's just not strong enough to have a feel for this job.

Gravatar "Your mentor Dick Cheney concocted in total awareness of its spuriousness, endless crocks of shit about WMD and Al Qaeda connections to Iraq ..."
Even if I accepted this at face value, which obviously I don't, no one is seriously arguing it was done for anything other than a twisted sense of national interest. Edwards has been snorting up fat lines of tort medical insurance in order to build himself a nice house.
As for his political program, it's the most irresponsible chunk of cynical populism to be found anywhere north of the Rio Grande ...
Give me one reason not to loathe him, I'm genuinely interested.

Gravatar VDH on the Obama Plan:
"So, yes, Obama's suggestion is fraught with hypocrisy and poorly thought out and patently political and designed to touché Hillary, given her recent knocks that he was naive on national security. But his suggestion still must be countered logically and rationally since millions of Americans, as the senator's focus groups no doubt attest, are frustrated by this inaction as well, and the very notion that an aide beneficiary like Pakistan is harboring, willingly or not, leftover architects of 9/11."
http:// corner.nationalreview.com...WY4YzAxN2EyNzk=

Gravatar "Even if I accepted this at face value, which obviously I don't, no one is seriously arguing it was done for anything other than a twisted sense of national interest."

Of course they are, but if you haven't heard by now, there's no point. (Hint: I think they wanted a nice house and a lot of jello).

"Give me one reason not to loathe him, I'm genuinely interested."

I don't care if you loathe him, it's just important to keep all loathings up front and personal.

Gravatar "Obama is a decent fellow, I have nothing against him, he's just not strong enough to have a feel for this job."
A moderately charismatic soft-headed leftist IMHO, riding the wave of America's deep rooted longing for a Black President. Keep falling for this myself, especially with Condi (before she got Borged by State) - obviously prefer the country got its shot of African leadership from a tough Republican than a drippy welfarist Democrat, even if that requires a little patience.

Gravatar http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/arch...ives/ 003851.php

Brilliant Republican Trent Lott suggests getting out of Dodge and coming back September 12, due to rumours of terrorist threats on D.C. Senility is rampant.

'the wave of America's deep rooted longing for a Black President.'

Maybe, I don't know. To some degree, I'm sure, but I never have heard people talking about it as such.

Gravatar "I never have heard people talking about it as such."
Krauthammer wrote a sympathetic piece on that a while back, and then there's '24'
But I'm mostly remembering the Powell excitement (never quite ignited with me), then Condi (caught that bug bad) ...

Gravatar Powell's and Condi's fate in the Bush administration does not yet show much. In a sense, they've both been used as black servants, although Condi was an insider. She's not calling any shots though, but you probably are just responding to her personally--complicated and brilliant, but not quite able to really command. And she has not done her job during the pre-9/11 ignored intelligence, and probably because there's just a smattering of confidence she can't 'fill out', as it were.

Gravatar The State Department just destroys people, at least it seems that way. Tough and brilliant going in, spineless Tranzi bureaucrat after a few months inside.
Shut it down.

Gravatar Not a fan of Powell, personally. Had more hope for Condi, but that seems misplaced now, or at least an irrelevance.

Gravatar Veering dangerously off-topic, but this is good, a Soviet dissident goes to university in SF, "My Second Marxist Indoctrination":

Imagine the utter amazement of a refugee from a Communist country, where Marxism was forced on all students, now having to sink in a puddle of socialist propaganda again -- but this time in the middle of an American university!

Imagine the astonishment of a person who, after fighting the KGB and being a refusenik, finally comes so close to her dream of receiving a real education instead of indoctrination, only to find herself, once again, in the middle of a socialist brainwashing machine -- but this time in San Francisco.

http:// studentsforacademicfreedo...rxist120303.htm

Gravatar Even better (same author):

The mere existence of America gave us the courage to fight. Some people who just wanted to leave the Soviet Union paid with prison sentences just for declaring a desire to leave the paradise surrounded by barbed wire and armed guards shooting escapees in the back. The escapees didn’t want to take anything with them. They just dreamed of departing, even naked, with their children on their shoulders. They hijacked airplanes, invented air balloons which evaded radar, swam at night from the beaches of the Black Sea or jumped from the stage during concert tours as Baryshnikov and Makarova did. The Socialist empire didn’t want to lose its main property: its slaves. (Listen, you “poets,” dreaming about socialism!)

Bill just got signed, is pretty good news.

Gravatar Playing defense not normally something to get excited about (especially considering what can realistically be expected viz govt competence), but I like this:

"Provides civil immunity to those who, in good faith, report suspicious activities that threaten the safety and security of passengers on a transportation system or that could be an act of terrorism."

(although doesn't the "in good faith" still open the door to terror-supporter 'lawfare'?)

And this:

"Requires the president to confirm that Pakistan is making progress combatting al-Qaida and Taliban elements within its boarders [sic] before the United States provides aid to the country."

(sure I'm not alone in thinking this could go quite a lot further, even all the way to the 'Obama Plan' or beyond)

(sure I'm not alone in thinking this could go quite a lot further, even all the way to the 'Obama Plan' or beyond)

Of course, and I was actually a bit surprised to even see it there. As for the 'high risk funding', I think that there has been some higher funding than 2005 and 2006 for New York and Washington, but not up to the 2004 levels, when it finally got really properly balanced.

I can see why you would get a thing about Condi. Not only brilliant, but charming sometimes and even beautiful--once in a while she seems slightly lost in that bunch, and I'm sure that's why she meets with her chamber music group frequently and plays a lot of Brahms; I'm sure she's a wonderful pianist.

Gravatar http://www.mercurynews.com/celeb...ties/ ci_6535292

Just look at this pathetic shithead. He was on Charlie Rose only a few weeks after 9/11 and came out for Bin Laden. Rose took umbrage, but I don't have any idea why he was interviewed, the little pinhead idiot. Acting style considered 'intense.' He makes movie bombs though, too. That movie 'The Pledge', with Jack Nicholson from 2000, was his baby, and it was one of the most godawful concoctions ever to come out of Hollywood. He got all these big stars like V. Redgrave and H. Mirren and even Sam Shepard (!) and Mickey Rourke and and a bunch of others, he'd just plop them in one scene and let them talk for awhile, then they'd never reappear. Talk about episodic, all these fine actors just came across as forms of cameo-whores. If you can ruin a Jack Nicholson movie, you can ruin anything: He is fully capable of 'gardening blights' like Beckmesser, the graceless and losing contestant in Die Meistersinger.

Gravatar "Just look at this pathetic shithead ..."
- excellent character judgment on your part :)
There should be a special Oscar category for Mindless Radical Bozo of the year, it's what these losers are aiming for.

Gravatar It looks as if both Tancredo's and Obama's remarks on Pakistan may be turning out to be pretty useful, if you see them outside the presidential campaign (with Obama). Tancredo's is quite hilarious, and he doesn't let on that in the 90s the 'holy shrines' were thoroughly desecrated as described in Lawrence Wright's book. I doubt most Muslims even know about that (that kind of fact probably wouldn't sink in even if they were given scientific proof), nor that Bin Laden's father did a lot of work on the places. Anyway, the Pakistanis had to react, and stupidly, which is good, because you begin to force them out of their filth that way. They've clearly not done a damn thing and don't intend to. I just looked at some stuff about their nuclear arsenal. That they have nuclear weapons is one of the most ridiculous errors ever allowed, although I haven't studied the whole history so know nothing about it. You'll probably know about the Chinese part. Would the Chinese do this now?

Gravatar have to stop thinking about the best one word description for: IN GOD WE TRUST & RENDER UNTO CAESAR. i digress! anyway, five smooth stones

Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. "I cannot go in these," he said to Saul, "because I am not used to them." So he took them off. Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd's bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.

Gravatar "Would the Chinese do this now?"
I'm not crazy enough to pretend to expertise on this stuff, but in a lot of interconnected areas (esp. relations with DPRK and Pak.) seems to me there's a change underway - expect it to be glacial though.
Kagan wrote a good piece on this kind of thing, arguing that global tensions between liberal and autocratic government were ultimately far more serious than the Islamoron show, with the basic trends of Russian and Chinese international behavior being quite deeply settled (maybe I already linked to it?), driven by a sense of ideological threat to the legitimacy of their political systems that far outweighed anything likely to come out of the Jihad. My assumption is that a few nukes going off could change those calculations fairly rapidly, though.

Gravatar what are you always saying nick about america stumbling around until we figure things out? imho, a major challenge reinstating the American draft: women in the military. in order to continue to support Iraq & the war on terror we will reinstate the draft. probably when the next president is in office. at some point, The Hyperstitional Black Hat gets real with interest. it'll be interesting to see when & for whom that hat gets real.

I couldn't find it searching here, so this is the Kagan. Very good, indispensible, way too much reality, but peculiarly calming. I don't know if it means leaving the Philistines behind or becoming more of one.

Gravatar "in order to continue to support Iraq & the war on terror we will reinstate the draft."
-- that doesn't seem likely to me, for the following reasons:
1) With a draft, you have to finish up within 5 years or so, doesn't seem an appropriate time-restraint for WWIV.
2) Draftees bring morale issues and don't really fit the trend to technically integrated cyberwarriors that can only accelerate as things escalate. Professionalization is surely an irresistible tide, conforming to postindustrial war-making (influx of the robots).
3) With a long war, the economy needs careful tending and is even the ultimate key to victory, industrial surge capacity just doesn't have the endurance (this most obviously seen between performance difference of Soviet Russia in WWII vs WWIII). The draft is such a blunt social instrument that it completely disregards the strategic component of civilian employment (by overriding distributed market signals coming from self-selection of service personnel -- the reason the left likes it, as with most things, is the reason it wouldn't work).
4) The only positive reason for a draft is political -- the military sure as hell don't want one. Unclear to me how 'positive' even that supposed political positive is (since only the left field seem interested in one, it isn't exactly off-the-wall paranoia to question the genuine motivation). If the civilian sector needs to feel involved, ways could be found to soak up greater input, without sacrificing professional military competence and stamina. Building the military just takes more resources, a draft would do nothing to help.
5) Longish-term I'd project the counter-trend even further, towards military privatization, catalytic SF 'crystals' raising contra armies supported by black ops, and ultimately anti-jihad militias running killer-robot squads from their basements ...

Gravatar 5 years? it's been 2,153 days since 9/11. we're at war. morale issues? blunt social instrument? war. economy? i'm positive Rosie the Riveter can be upgraded for WWIV. political? absolutely. everything else you say is priceless. outsourcing the war? :)

Gravatar 'doesn't seem an appropriate time-restraint for WWIV."

Much like the Surge, it needs endless new re-beginnings after each new faltering. Therefore, not only inappropriate but perhaps even unfair. I think we can look forward to many new failures which always need new bolstering--because, as we have seen, success is proven only by endless renewals of faith in the instruments of failure, not in results. Results are quite outmoded by now, and one need not expect them. They are delusional and meaningless. Only in phantom limbs and fantasies of ultimate Klein Bottles can we find salvation without going back to W. H. Auden's bars.

An excellent summary! Maybe the Red Mosque was the new beginning that was necessary, but the rest of what the Pakistanis are saying is largely merde.

Gravatar troll-prime, i'm green with envy. you do this better than me! now go to bed. i am.

Gravatar oh, i know what the 2nd one reminds me of. dobby

Money quote (specially fro troll-prime):
"I'm not saying the 9/11 Commission is a Saudi shell operation, merely making the observation that, whenever you come across a big-shot Saudi, it's considerably less than six degrees of separation between him and the most respectable pillars of the American establishment."

Gravatar Peanuts by Charles Bukowsky:

(OK, it's probably just sad to be amused by this sort of thing)

Gravatar Well, maybe, but I naturally thought some of it was funny too.

http://villagevoice.com/blogs/ bu...rmax_in_bag.php

You'll hate this, but it does have a good photo (apparently not so easy to come by) of the hideous new American Embassy in Baghdad. Jesus God-Stalinist is right. Kidnapping Filipinos to work on it is pretty fucked up though. There's something REALLY weird about it, though: It reminds me of Windsor Castle.

Gravatar http://www.washingtonpost.com/ wp...d=moreheadlines

Things going in some of the right directions, but I can't believe they want to talk about opium, etc. That's so irrelevant.

Gravatar http://www.washingtonpost.com/ wp...id=opinionsbox1

Did you see this? Interesting if it comes from our comedian mayor.

Gravatar "I can't believe they want to talk about opium, etc."
- puritan psychosis, and it's really biting the West in the ass, at a time when it just isn't affordable to have grand-strategy skewed off-course by lunatic moral agendas -- hasn't anything been learnt from the Colombia debacle? This kind of mindless crap really brings me to the edge of despair ...

Gravatar Yes, that was good. There was news just a few weeks ago about these stonings, I think there was even a video. First time I hear the term 'sexual proximity' without marriage. So one gets arrested for this, even though I first thought there was a typo/misspelling/misheard thing, but 'sexual promiscuity' is more or less with or without marriage--probably nobody gets to do it in Iran, so maybe there's no law against it, although they'd certainly stone you for it. There was another word thing in the American press this week I can't quite remember, was vaguely like that with some words of legalese that were then altered--don't think it was the Gonzales parsing though.

Gravatar As for the drugs business, we are much worse in the U.S. than the U.K. and Europe in general ever was, of course. You know that, though.

Gravatar Tatiana Menaker must perform 40 hours of community service for a nonprofit community group with a charitable purpose after she made comments to pro-Palestinian demonstrators during a San Francisco State University rally in May.

Menaker, however, said she doesn't blame SFSU; the university, she said, didn't know any better. "We cannot demand from the gentiles to understand us as Jews can understand us," she said. "I don't hold any grudges."

Menaker was facing disciplinary action for calling a pro-Palestinian student a sharmoota (the Arabic word for bitch) and telling another to "Go f--- your camels" in response to other defamatory words during a May 7 rally.

Gravatar General Sir mike Jackson got it right. US policy in Iraq is intellectually and morally bankrupt

Eg...

Gravatar When you send an advanced party to the surface to scout things out and try to set up shop, the risk is always that those guarding the surface will make a rash, tactical error and attack the boarding party immediately - knowing full well that there's a whole army right behind it trying to get out in desperation.

So what does one do? Send skirmish squads - draw more of the rats out.

Afterall, those starving for 'food' are compelled to breach the surface at all costs - even if they are all squashed like ants and the survivors run back into the holes they just emerged from.

Application for 'resurrection': denied due to a long waiting list.
