God-body post, dun. And thanks for the shout. I co-sign the Jerry's pick; dude entertains me.
Does Sickamore still put out those "I Can Make You Famous" mixtapes? His shit always had premium beats from artists I actually cared about, not the latest Swizz Beatz knock off from J Hood. Anyway, he is right: regardless of the content or quality of the music, the South is, in fact, running this. At that URB party I checked out on Friday, before the hipsters got scared off the dancefloor by N.Y. shit made before 2002, it was non-stop South: Triple 6, Jeezy, T.I., Big Boi, Youngbloodz--and this was at a Dip Set party.
Rhymefest is playful and can write when he concentrates, but the production is all over the place, some of the risks smart, some embarrassing (have you heard that Strokes song yet?); Lupe is as you described, although the lyrics make the record worthy of repeat listening; and I'll be sitting shotgun when we ride out on Rick Ross. Honestly, I think we should drop a mixtape ()--Ridin' Out, Vol. 1: The Rae Carruth Tape. We'll put the industry in the trunk.

Yeah...I heard the one that samples "Someday." If they didn't throw the little snippet in at the beginning, I probably wouldn't be able to pick it out though. And I know you're talking about the ODB track without calling it out by name. HORRIBLE.

At least Trick Daddy had some sort of personality. Much as I didn't like the music, he will always get some love from me if nothing else but for the sheer hilarity of the line:
Are those Bugle Boy Jeans?
Hell nah, ho, you know they polos.
Say what you want about the man, that's character. He actually wrote that lyric down and I assume that he probably had been asked that question. This means that on one (and hopefully multiple) occasions, Trick Daddy had asked if he wore Bugle Boy. L'il Wayne would've just said he was wearing polos.
Right on, as usual about the Kanye album. Much as his lyrics are mostly mediocre, he's good for a solid line or two each song. It was definitely production. Jon Brion is a talented guy. Should he be making hip hop records. No. People need to study ATLiens if they wanna' know how to make an "experimental" hip hop album that is also brilliant. Nice post.

Terrific Blog Poll answers, to which I'll directly link later today.
And of the countless "pros" that have accompanied reading your blog every day, you nailed the one "con" - that sinking "What the hell have I done with the next three years of my life" thing.
At least it's cheap...

I'd have to say the most gratifying and frustrating thing about reading your stuff is that I find myself thinking, "Damn, that's exactly what I envisioned my answers sounding like if I actually opened my brain up for a few minutes and thought about what I wanted to say instead of watching Lone Wolf McQuade." Then again, I did get to watch Lone Wolf McQuade for the first time since I was about 8 last night.
Although I will say, I give ESPN a bit of a pass for leaning heavy on ND for national title talk just because most of their audience expects them to go somewhere. And where else are they going to go? True, there's a good chance they might not survive their first game, but are you going to go to OSU with their gutted defense, the same Big 10 schedule you're talking about, and a trip to Texas? In an ideal world, they'd spread the love and we'd get in depth coverage of 5 or 10 teams with a realistic chance. But in reality, it's easier to post Shelley Smith on Brady Quinn's doorstep to try to count the number of dumps he takes in a day.
Good call on the Wheelhouse though, not only is it always strong content, but just reading the 70+ comment threads is downright engaging.
Finally, for what it's worth, I'd give full agreement to the TBS review. The kind of flat opening definitely struck me. But I grew into a fuller liking of Where You Want To Be, minus the standard overwrought acoustic, over a bit of time, so perhaps that's the case here too. Regardless, they're still one of my more favored acts to see live.

I would not rule out FSU for national championship. The ACC will be realtively weak next year with both Miami and VA Tech going under massive coaching chnages. BC is going to be good for BC but that isnt saying much. FSU's schedule should be relatively weak, but it worked for USC all these years. I say FSU becomes a true powerhouse again and makes their first real title run since the Weinke Era.
In other news.
Rix has a quarterback camp called Champion Training Academy.

Reminds me of when Keanu did Hamlet in Toronto and they had to change the line "Most excellent friend!" because the audience kept laughing.

Dude, Johnny Isakson at graduation? I've seen him give graduation speeches three times (I graduated high school with his daughter, and he's spoken at my high school like 20 times), and each time it was the exact same thing. Something about the seven super secrets of successful people, but he loses count around three and meanders off on a story about the guy who wrote the song "Rainbow Connection". He spoke at my youngest brother's graduation, and he had an outside shot at valedictorian, which spoke right before Isakson. We totally wanted him to be valedictorian and give the rainbow connection/successful people secrets speech right before him, just to see what Johnny would do.
Also, with Isakson speaking at commencement, I think that makes the speaker at UGA Law a Republican something like 6 out of the last 7 years. The veins in Eugene Wilkes' head are probably 6 inches across and deep purple.

Ooh...a reference to Professor Wilkes! Yeah, shit got to pop when we had Clarence Thomas come in. He did his damnedest to try to block the whole thing and put up signs on his door that said "stop the evil judge" or something like that. Say what you will about Thomas' politics, but I'm pretty sure it's best for UGA to have Supreme Court justices come visit us.
And by the way, it's the six super secrets of successful people. It does tend to ramble, but then again, compared to the LSA's shameless begging for money I haven't earned yet, it'll do. Ooh! They gave me a luggage tag! Where's my checkbook?
In the end, I guess I was disappointed somewhat by the Kenny Archer story, mostly because I thought he was going to tell us how he eventually changed his name to Kenny Rogers and became a huge success.

While graduating a few years earlier and from a different school, I have an identical recollection of our speaking situation -- I think it might have been Mark Warner. That's all I remember other than it was one of the most physically miserable days of my life.
For one season, I think I'd take Bob Stoops. The bloom is off his rose to a degree, but he's still a damn good coach. Plus his systems aren't so odd that it would take a long time to grasp them. Good motivator and instills a swagger in his team.
As far as I know, I'm still on the wait list at UVA. I never heard back from them, so there's still a chance. This could double as the plot of a terrible summer comedy, possibly starring Jerry O'Connell.

Yeah, the Professor Wilkes reference definitely brought back some memories. If I'm ever invited to be a law school commencement speaker in Athens, I'll probably open my speech by saying, "Dreyfus did it!" just to watch his head explode.
I was in his criminal procedure class the semester that the O.J. criminal trial verdict was rendered. He came into class the next day and began by saying, "Yesterday was one of the greatest days in the history of the United States." When a W.L.S.A. member began challenging him on O.J.'s domestic violence history, Professor Wilkes said the feminist movement was "taking the short view."
The thing that killed me about the Clarence Thomas protest was that he did it with posterboard and magic markers. Hey, if you're going to protest a U.S. Supreme Court justice, do it right; don't insult the man by trotting out homemade signs when you can go to the trouble of getting preprinted protest placards.
Anyway, congratulations, Ian. For what it's worth, I touched upon Jason Burnette's and your graduation here:

Kyle...if I were you, I'd pay far more attention to Mr. Burnette's progress than mine. As far as I know, dude's the valedictorian. And if not, he's one of the most intimidating intellects I've ever encountered. He's one of the few people I've interacted with that I consider a genius; it's like House without the Vicodin addiction and bizarre season-enders.
