I do the same thing on the Soul channel on XM. 85% of the time, it's been done. It is really surprising as someone who began consuming rap in the mid 90's and just wasnt aware of the canon of soul/funk prior to the Ye's of the world making bank off of it. Of course there was the kings of sampling, bad boy, but to me, prior to "discovering" soul music as a general interest on my own, those beats on Ready to Die were original tracks to me. (of course i knew they had been sampled SOMEWHERE) but i let ignorance be bliss. Definitely wasn't the kid that read the liner notes for the acknowledgements/copyright approvals

I figure if we cover mainstream rock like The Killers and Fall Out Boy, we pretty much are obligated to give shit like that the kicking it deserves. Besides, "Lips of an Angel" seems to be ridiculously popular, and I really can't work out why.
Jonathan, you know most critics write reviews to make statements about themselves, not the music. And while riding for the cause of Fall Out Boy and Hinder make the same statement in essence ("I like shitty music"), it ends up being interpreted differently. Liking a popular band like Fall Out Boy aligns you with ironists and teenagers, which are evergreens of the "if you can't beat 'em, join' em" school of music criticism that allows us to give raves to everyone from Justin Timberlake to Amy Diamond. But liking a popular band like Hinder aligns you with beer-swilling assholes who wear football jerseys in public and think Audioslave are the shit. There's no possible way to make liking Hinder cool (and for what it's worth, you might as well save it for OST, since it's pretty old).
And if you're trying to call me Simmons, let me ask you: do you think he'd be able to pitch my idea without exhausting his knowledge of modern rappers (let's put 50 Cent and Snoop on it!)?
And Johnny, I have seen the video for "Hold The Line," and it's fucking awesome in that "THIS IS CORPORATE ROCK" way. I was just considering reviewing the record on the basis that since Stylus covers good-to-middling mainstream rock, we should be covering bad mainstream rock. Kind of like how you did the Yung Joc review last year. Though Hinder doesn't even have a motorcycle dance in its favor. But yeah, I wouldn't bother with an OST - I didn't realize it was that old. It's just been released here in Australia. And since I get unbelievable amounts of customers coming up to me at work asking for the Hinder record - including a good number of women - I started wondering how on earth such a shitty band could be speaking to so many people.
I think a Hinder review could be really really interesting, Jonathan, if you focused primarily on trying to answer the question posed by your last sentence there.
