In all fairness to the artist, I think the similarity of the two character designs is meant to underscore the point. The aesthetic specs for the "official" Gallant Girl are so ludicrously specific that even slight variations are deemed unattractive and intolerable. It's the Liz Lemon factor.

The part that's confused me - this was one of the five finalists for the Shadowline "create a super heroine" competition earlier this year (at the time of voting it was called "I Hate Galaxy Girl"). And yet it's plotted by Jim Valentino, the judge of said competition. Firstly, if that's not a breach of the rules, it has to at least be on somewhat shaky moral ground. And secondly, how come Valentino's series DIDN'T win if he made the rules and judged the competition?! How did he break the news to himself?

"As a new writer, Cahill got an assist from one of comics’ veterans, Jim Valentino. “As often is the case with new writers,” said Simon, “sometimes the core concept is good, and the writing is good, but there are problems with pacing and getting the book from points A to Z without wandering off track every now and then."

Oh wow, Valentino' stooped to ripping off Howard Chaykin's Power and Glory. How nice.

Sounds like a decent concept with poor execution, I probably won't pick it up. I'm mostly just posting to say, Paul, I like how you review occasional random comics that have nothing to do with Marvel, DC, or the X-Men, in spite of the focus being on the X-Men. I think it adds a necessary perspective to the X-reviews if you sometimes throw in a non-X-book or even a non-superhero book just to show that similar criticism or recommendations can be applied outside of the mutant niche.
This kind of review (other examples would be those Minx books and Young Liars) keeps me coming back even when the current X-Men books don't interest me.

First, what the hell is the Liz Lemon Factor. Google has nothing for the exact phrase.
And Don't tell me who the character is, I know who the character is. But I don't watch the show, so tell me what the Factor is and why people expect me to know what it is.
Also, saying that someone is ripping off "Power and Glory" is pretty... nasty, and assuming that someone really has A) heard of it B) maybe read it or C) really has glommed onto the idea that the story concept of Power and Glory is so married to Power and Glory that for that concept to be used somewhere else it's automatically freaking wrong!
Cyrano de Bergerac. Prince and the Pauper. Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. last survivor of a Doomed Civilization.
Yeah, all of those story ideas HAVE to be used just once in just one story.
