Panorama recently underwent a creative rethink, as no one was watching it. So they stripped it to half an hour and focus now on more "relevant" stories than the more "stuffy" subjects they covered before (which I assume you can instead find out about on Newsnight or BBC4). It seems to be working, from what I've heard, but I'm nt sure the programme was ever supposed to be entertaining.
Oh, and the new "hip" filming methods you've noticed are presumably part of the rethink.
