So he was. Which is ridiculous - of all the people who should fall on their sword over this affair, the guy who misnamed a kitten by disregarding the result of a free online vote is right at the bottom of the list.

Moreover, his side of events, as I recall, was that there was a late flood of votes towards "Cookie" (rather than "Socks", the name used) and that it was thought this was from an attempt at "fixing" the result.

But if they really thought it was an inappropriate name for a cat - which has certainly been reported as the BBC party line - why did they put it on the ballot in the first place?
