The Facebook model for user groups has merit but Facebook itself is not architected to support such a model. There really does need to be a profile content show/hide feature and a group-side limitation on content and membership for it to work.

Sarah,
Facebook is one example of social networking which may be in the early stages of evolving into how we handle workflow -- with an interface that handles not just our profile but the status of various projects we're working on -- it automates a lot -- and is in some ways a virtual community framework. I have more info on Social Networking in my slide presentation at http://www.slideshare.net/BillAl...-trend-and-
tool which is what I'll be using as the basis of a talk I'll be giving with Jenna Moore next month. Hope to see you there.
