So you don't subscribe to the "butterflies wings" theory of why hurricanes form?

Great comment Zendo. Yes, but that was not the theme I wanted to follow in this particular post; it was heavy enough. I was interested in getting to the relationship among wind speed, pressure, storm size, wind-water friction, etc. The classical dynamics, if you will.
With regard to the butterfly effect, or what we might refer to as non-linear dynamics, that's involved in the many self-organizational steps that occur through out hurricane evolution. In general, there is a butterfly-type effect anytime a convection cell (like a thunderstorm) begins.
I will think about writing a post on that topic, which will inevitably bring us to the origin of life, and THEN will get us sidetracked as the hard right starts attacking evolution, etc. I should do that, just to rile up the righties, (heaven knows I spend enough time doing that to the Left), but I am kinda busy right now.
Thanks.

Being perpetually behind, I only now saw this post--but it was fascinating. Thanks for posting it.
Thank goodness there are still a few Type M people in the world!
