Oh, that's bad. Reminds me of one time a friend of mine was TA-ing with four other people and at the end of the class this one student (whom none of the TAs recognized) didn't know which person was his TA and couldn't figure out whom to give his exam to. He did know that his TA was male, but that was it. And -- wait for it -- my friend was the only male TA. Sheesh!

I don't get it when students don't know who is teaching their classes. I mean, I always knew, TAs and all. I was intensely curious. Dammit, if we'd had the web I totally would have googled them all! And have a lot of dirt in advance. Not to use. Just to know.
Once I ran into a student of mine -- 30 student class, met 3X/week, lots of interaction as I watched them work on projects -- one semester later. I said hi and she was like "oh. hmm. did you teach one of my classes or something?"
OK, you stared at me for 3 hours per week, 16 full weeks, just 2 months ago -- and you don't recall who I am??? Wow.

Congrats on a great class! All the academic garbage aside, we really do have good jobs, don't we?

I'm not a Victorianist, I do listen to hip-hop, and I haven't smoked weed in ages, but I spit my coffee on my screen, laughing at that. Do I count?

LOL, that poor student.
I'm the opposite of profgrrl: once they're out of my class, I very seldom remember my students. I'm the queen of the "oh yeah, right, and your name was what....?" thing, which makes me feel sooo bad, b/c I know how nice it is to have your teachers actually remember you and how crushing it is when they don't. But I have always been absolutely terrible with names.

I had a student pull a fast one this morning. We gave a quiz instead taking roll with a sign-in sheet (class size: 100+). After class was over, a student that I know from a previous class came up & asked about signing in. Since I already knew him, I knew that he had not been in class. I told him that the quiz would count as his attendance. You could see it dawn on him that his little scam of trying to sneak in & sign the attendance roll without attending class was demolished.
But student bs aside, it is a wonderful thing to behold when they put on their thinking caps & truly engage. That's what kept me pursuing an academic career... it sure beats getting a 'real' job!!

I once had a prof (very early on) who knew every person's name the second day of class. I try to do that, too, because the students love you for it and it's so much easier to get them to work with you when they know you know who they are. Plus, I get a lot of people taking more classes that way (Dr. ADM likes us!). Cheesy, but true.

I simply can't imagine not knowing who your professors are and still being a functioning human being! It would be like watching the Tonight Show a bunch of times and not understanding that Jay Leno was hosting. Makes you wonder exactly how much chronic is being imbibed!
And yes . . . all in all, we really do have good jobs, don't we? I was thinking that several times myself this week.
