I think that this is a sincere compliment and one that should be valued. You've apparently converted an apathetic student into one with some glimmerings of enthusiasm just beginning to surface--and that is a major conversion!

One of my grad students told me that she really, really adored the Victorian fiction course I taught last year--it's just that she hated everything in the course. When I asked, with some bemusement, if that was a compliment, she assured me that it was.
Apparently, she's still suffering post-traumatic stress syndrome from Bleak House...

I'm sure the inarticulate way your student expressed it is probably just a sign of their excitement about the class, and the nervousness of talking to a prof Definately a compliment!
