Amazing post. I couldn't quite account for my own sadness yesterday and ultimately treated it lightly on my blog. I do use Derrida in my work but not primarily or frequently. That said, I do not think I would have pursued this career or my particular lines of research had I not been exposed (early on) to the rigor and freedom I found in Derrida. Simply put--and as you so passionately express about your own experience--his work changed the very way I think. Your post helped me to realize this and to understand that OF COURSE I would feel a sense of loss at his death.
I admire how you described the loss in this post. Am going to forward your blog to several friends who were yesterday expressing similar feelings.

Thank you for this post -- I agree entirely that people too often ignore the fact that Derrida in fact keeps us returning to the Western tradition, digging for gold.
And I wonder if the fact that he was so much a personality as well as a thinker may be part of the enduring annoyance at those who wish that someone else, anyone else, might have had the huge formative impact Derrida has had and will continue to have.
