Thanks for a great post! I was interested to hear your description of that self-revelatory first day of class. I've actually never yet come out in a class, mostly because my hunch is that it would suddenly make me rather than the material the focus for the class and would shut down some students; but then again, I don't teach classes that are explicitly about sexuality as you do. But I do use phrases like "my partner" in the classroom, so it's pretty obvious to anyone who wants to know. And, in fact, it's a small enough campus that I assume I have no secrets anyway.

Terrific post! I also come out to my students if it's pedagogically relevant. So if the course in any way entails discussions on issues of identity, sexuality, or orientation, I usually come out on the first or second day of class. It's amazing, and empowering (in both directions), and scary, all at the same time. Anyway, thanks for the great post!
