I love the breakdown.

Especially the first one. I was often tempted to sit down with that sort of student and say something like, "You do know that telling me all this is a stupid thing to do, right?"

Here is how those conversations go with me:
Student: "I missed class b/c I was drunk."
Me: "Why are you telling me this?!?"
Student: "I'm just being honest!"
Me: "You should lie."

Sometimes I'll also point out that there's honest, and then there's tact.

it was a good game though. our class watched it in the tv room during break. this week, for the first time ever, i found myself saying, "if i had to miss the game to teach, you had to miss the game to come to class. sorry. no make up."
