Thank you for confirming that we shouldn't see this. It was on the list, but then shelved to a maybe.
Have you seen Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love? Is a good serious role for him. (And I'm totally not a fan)

I'm pretty sure the mom is played by Tea Leoni, not Marisa Tomei.
- She who reads way too many movie reviews.

Darn. This is what I thought, given the reviews, but it had looked promising. Oh well, we won't bother.
I found _Punch Drunk Love_ the WEIRDEST movie. I did think Adam Sandler was actually good in it, but couldn't generate an ounce of liking for any of the characters.

Jill, thanks for the correction, you're completely right. My brain does weird things with names sometimes...
I HATED Punch-Drunk Love. My gf LOVED it. So I do understand that many people admire it -- Anderson is a great filmmaker. But like NK I just couldn't care about the characters. I had other issues with it, too, but it was long ago enough now that I've suppressed those...

Punch Drunk Love is a weird movie, for sure. I found it oddly intriguing. I don't recall why. And I was surprised that I was able to sit through a film with Adam Sandler in it. That may have been the intrigue right there

Punch-Drunk Love was weird, but I guess I'm all for movies that shake up our assumptions and narrative expectations.
In the interest of full disclosure, though, I'm totally biased on this one--Filmmaker used to work in Hollywood and his mentor (the guy who brought Filmmaker under his wing and helped him move up through the ranks) had a prominent role in the production of PDL.
That's disappointing about Spanglish. Many of your insights were hinted at in the preview, but I was hoping it wouldn't be so stereotypical.

I absolutely hated Punch Drunk Love, which is why I was actually looking forward to seeing Spanglish, since it was clear from the former that Sandler (whom I normally can't stand) is capable of being a really good actor, and I hoped he would shine in the latter. Ah well--from your review, Mel, it sounds as though Spanglish must now be stricken from the list. Thanks for saving me two hours and $8.00!
