I'm sorry to hear that The Prestige didn't quite live up to expectations. I don't get out to see movies much, but was hoping to rent it with The Illusionist in a couple of months for a magic double-header. Maybe I'll just go re-read Carter Beats the Devil which I enjoyed immensely...

I've been trying to puzzle this out as well, but saw only The Illusionist and haven't yet gotten to The Prestige. The former, to me, seems to use magic as the conduit for accessing power vis-a-vis social class. It's set with reference to the beginning of the end of the Austro-Hungarian empire.
