"this bit of flotsam" didn't just take hold on its own. It was pampered, caressed, fed, stroked and exercised by the rethuglycan partisans as part of their 'base feed' that keeps all kinds of special treats for the various groups. It is a symbiotic relationship. They nurture the petty hates that divide groups so they can control them, harness them to help pull their agenda along everytime it reaches the interactive phase.
SOmehow, in the minds of some, the idea of social welfare became equivalent to the Final Solution.
