Hmm, Tilly has been given lots of 'unisex' toys over the years, ie. train sets, cars, brick etc yet she is naturally drawn to dolls, dressing up and tea parties. There are still 'nice' dolls available and Bratz are most definately banned, in fact Tilly thinks they are ugly.
Don't worry about girls toys not provoking imaginative play if the incredible, creative nuggets my daughter comes out with are anything to go by!
And as for career aspirations, for all her girly ways - princess frock, many dolls and ballet lessons, she still maintains that she would like to be a safari park vet when she grows up so that she can drive a jeep!

Those Bratz dolls are horrible!!
I'd like to see toy shops display their wares not divided into gender, but merely into type. Nothing to stop girls playing with lego and meccano, or boys playing with dolls. Maybe 'soldier' dolls should just be in the 'dolls' aisle and let the kids sort through them.
I did veto certain toys. I really, really didn't think nuclear war was a suitable subject for play, so until my boys were teens, those things were banned. Firmly. Don't be afraid to take a stand as long as you think your vetoes through carefully. 
I do agree with Banksy though, you can offer what you like, but you may still find that your boy prefers meccano and your girl prefers dolls.

Tino's niece (6) got a talking one for Christmas from her Mum and it said something like Do you have your own room???
When I was a little girl my mum didn't allow me to have Barbies(as they look like pornstars)only Sindys....hovever,now I'm the mum and my daughters are also not allowed Barbies.........however.....Bratz drive a vintage american Airstream Campervan.......so they're allowed them......and my feminist mother(who lusts after an Airstream) agrees!
