'Gates called on countries of the Persian Gulf and other regional powers - like Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon - to do more to support stability in Iraq.

"The embrace of Iraq by its fellow Gulf states will help contain the ambitions of Iran," he said. "As I have said before, the Iraqi people want to be your partners. Given the challenges in the Gulf and the reality of Iran, you should wish to be theirs."

Secretary Gates called for more intelligence-sharing and better border control to help the Iraqi government defeat the various insurgencies it faces.'

Patrick Cockburn, Middle East correspondent for The Independent, discusses the emphatically relative phrase “Baghdad is better,” imminent U.S. withdraw from Iraqi cities, former Sunni insurgents – gone mainstream – that can’t go back again, the status of Kurdish post-invasion land grabs and the awarding of Iraqi oil contracts to foreign corporations.

Iran Had a Democracy Before We Took It Away

http://www.truthdig.com/report/i...e_took_it_away/

Gravatar Iran wasn't a democracy in 1953. Mossedeq had suspended parliament and was increasingly unpopular, in part because the top Shia clerics were blasting him as a communist Soviet quisling. {There was still a lot of anti Soviet sentiment related to the WWII and post WWII occupation of Iran by the Soviets.}

I am not sure that the Quom clerics, Shah, Iranian military, and Bazaris (Iranian business community) were right that Mossedeq was a Soviet quisling. I don't doubt that the UK and anti Mossedeq Iranians persuaded Ike that Mossedeq was in cahoots with the Soviet communists. But Ike could have been wrong. Perhaps Mossedeq wanted to prove his independence from the Soviets to blunt the clerical attacks against him, and was open to better relations with the west and the global (which in 1953 was mostly western) business community.

I think Ike should have tried to reach out to Mossedeq, while simultaneously reaching out to the Quom Marjeya, Shah, Iranian military and Bazaris. Ike should have seen where the outreach to Mossedeq lead to. I think Ike should have stayed neutral when the Shah, clerics, Bazaris, Iranian military and Mi6 moved against Mossedeq.

Gravatar I think one reason that Khomeini turned anti American during 1979 was because he had used American help against the Shah in 1978/1979, and had worked with America to help the Shah defeat Mossedeq in 1953. In addition, the Quom clerics had played a major role in putting Reza Pahlavi Shah on the throne in 1925, just as they later played a major role in removing the Pahlavi Shah dynasty from the throne in 1979.

There was also the fact that Khomenei accepted considerable Israeli help to fight Saddam between 1980 and 1988. Being anti American in public was a way of deflecting criticism for his covert collaboration with Israel.

Gravatar [anand] "Iran wasn't a democracy in 1953."

America isn't a democracy in 2009. How could it be, when it stands for warmongering and waterboarding and detention without trial and kidnapping and the killing of innocent people?

Everybody knows that democracies are about peace and freedom.

So sorry, Anand.

[anand] "I am not sure that the Quom clerics, Shah, Iranian military, and Bazaris (Iranian business community) were right that Mossedeq was a Soviet quisling."

Yet more proof that in the inane world of Anand, there's no need for facts or research, or, in fact, the truth. Since of course it was the CIA and the Brits that spread the allegations of Mossadeq being a Communist. Basically, Anand knows bugger-all beyond the rancid samoosas he had for lunch. It's just a pity that when his defecatory urge becomes overpowering, he releases it all into the internet.

Gravatar Kill ISF Bruno can read the speaches from the top Shia clerics back in 1953. He can read from Vali Nasr's book. He can read what many historians at the time wrote.

In 1953 memories of the Soviet occupation of Iran were still fresh, and anti communist sentiment was widely felt and expressed. But of course kill ISF Bruno knows that. Perhaps Bruno is a communist?

Gravatar Anand in action ... it is to laugh. Let's take a look at this pathetic attempt, shall we?

[bruno] Since of course it was the CIA and the Brits that spread the allegations of Mossadeq being a Communist.
[anand] Bruno can read the speaches from the top Shia clerics back in 1953. He can read from Vali Nasr's book.

Maybe it's time for the bug spray, to put an end to a loathesome daalit roach.

Maybe it's time for some facts.

Maybe, Anand can read THIS:

“...[Central Intelligence] agency [CIA] officers orchestrating the Iran coup worked directly with royalist Iranian military officers, handpicked the prime minister's replacement, sent a stream of envoys to bolster the shah's courage, directed a campaign of bombings by Iranians posing as members of the Communist Party, and planted articles and editorial cartoons in newspapers.”
[...]
In early August, the C.I.A. stepped up the pressure. Iranian operatives pretending to be Communists threatened Muslim leaders with "savage punishment if they opposed Mossadegh," seeking to stir anti-Communist sentiment in the religious community. In addition, the secret history says, the house of at least one prominent Muslim was bombed by C.I.A. agents posing as Communists. It does not say whether anyone was hurt in this attack. The agency was also intensifying its propaganda campaign. A leading newspaper owner was granted a personal loan of about $45,000, "in the belief that this would make his organ amenable to our purposes."

[anand] "Perhaps Bruno is a communist?"

Perhaps Anand is a moron?
