Oh, Mojo, that's so sad!
I hadn't heard his story before. I have heard of others, but not Rakan's. To have it end in such a way is a real tragedy.
My condolences to those who knew him.

The boy with the infectious smile. Yes Mojo, I did read long ago about Rakan and how he was being saved....but now to read that he went back to his country only to be killed....only 14 years of age...this is so sad.

I believe that Rakan is an innocent victim of war that was caught in the middle as like are all innocent victims of war...
While I commend the actions of the people who tried to help him, I continue to condemn the war and occupation that caused him so much suffering....
I believe that Rakan is in a much better place now, free of the ugliness of corrupted, power hungry, and greedy people, free of war and occupation, and most of all free of suffering...
And he has been reunited with his parents. I am sure though he is sad that he had to leave his sisters behind to continue suffering...
He is a symbol for those of us still alive and hopefully we will learn the right lessons from his tragic suffering and his eventual tragic death....

CH and Mojo, thank you both for posting this very sad article. Rakan's story is a tragedy. We should always remember Rakan's great spirit made so memorable by his simile, that helped him to overcome his horrible injuries. For his tragic end, there is no one to blame except his murderers.

The tragic last moments of Margaret Hassan
When a renowned British aid worker was kidnapped in Iraq, the world was horrified. Her body was never recovered, but her execution was captured on video and sent to Al Jazeera, the Arab satellite channel. Robert Fisk watched it and reveals why it has never been broadcast

'caught in the middle'
No, murdered by idiots. This poor boy suffered so very much only to go home and be slaughtered by his fellow countrymen? What is wrong with those people???

Pamela, he was not killed "by his fellow countrymen." He was almost certainly killed by Takfiri or Baathist wackos. The Iraqis have sacrificed greatly to fight Takfiris and Baathists. You dishonor their sacrifice and courage when you say: "What is wrong with those people???"
