The fact that Mike Fontenot is allowed to wear #17 is a shame.

I don't think it's Mike Fontenot's fault. I don't know if that's what you were getting at.
I'm glad this was posted. Growing up in the small bayou town of Thibodaux, LA, many a youthful summers were spent watching the Cubs on WGN. It could have just as well been the Braves, but I chose to watch the Cubs because I liked the guy who wore #17 and wore that eyeblack.
As a youth, I was a firstbaseman who wore #17. I learned most of my 1B skills just from watching and mimicking Mark. He was my favorite Cub, and he'll probably be my favorite Cub of all time.
Great post.

Mark Grace is hands down my favorite Cub player of all time. He'll never make the Hall of Fame, but the Cubs should do the right thing and retire his number. I have a feeling #31 will be retired first, as Maddus and Fergie both wore it and I don't have an issue with that, just so long as they eventually get to Grace. Mike Fontenot wearing it doesn't bother me as much as when Bobby Hill wore it. Enough time has passed so that to most guys coming up, it's just another number. Hill wearing it was just too soon. In addition to Choi, Stairs, and McGriff, the Cubs also let Chris Stynes and Ron Coomer man first in 01. I pretty much ignored the 2001 Cubs, as I was completely disgusted by the way the Cubs treated Grace. Seeing how the Astros treated Craig Biggio the past couple years makes me feel even worse that the Cubs didn't do something similar for Mark. The only good thing about the post Grace era at first was that it created a need to get Derrek Lee.
Great post.

And that should be 'Maddux' not 'Maddus', but I hope you all would know that. My finger slipped and I proofread for shit.

IAN I'm just saying that it sucks that the Cubs are still letting guys wear the number, whereas Ted Lilly was denied #31 when he came on the team last year despite the fact that they've not made any announcements of retiring the number of Maddux/Jenkins.

You forgot to mention his dead on Mike Fetters impersonation while pitching in a blowout for the Diamondbacks.

Yeah I love his quote on giving up David Ross' first MLB career homer.
"I didn't have a scouting report on him. Obviously he can hit 65 mph fastballs."

It was great seeing Gracie and hearing his goofy voice on the broadcast today.
I remembered the SquareD commercials and thinking his voice was too dumb for radio.
I guess it's okay for TV though.

I get it, Jake. I hate that Fontenot gets to wear it, also.
