Thunder Matt's Saloon

I found what Matt Karcher told him to be potentially damming to the Cubs. This wasn't the entire team on the juice, but enough to raise some eyebrows. I wrote more about it at the bottom of this post.

AHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA
Roger Clemens, and Barry Bonds.
Oh my god.
Mister Funk... you are silly!
Maybe you're right... why would it be a big deal that arguably the greatest pitcher, and arguably the greatest hitter in baseball isn't a big deal.
You knew those names would be on the list, I knew those names would be on the list... but *BEING* on the list gives it a level of officiality to finally shut up those "innocent until proven guilty" retards.
This is a big deal.
The Saloons "over/under rated" lists suck.

Remember when the original news about Clemens/Pettitte/etc. came out in that affidavit? That was on paper too.
Why was it not official enough for you then, but suddenly it is today? Technically it was more official when the news first broke because it was in a government affidavit.
You seem to be missing the point of the post. I was talking about the fact that the Mitchell Report was hyped up as something that was going to bring baseball to its knees, but it turned out to be full of 80% players we already knew had ties to PEDs and 20% players no one cares about/are no longer in the league.

This is the report people are listening to.
Did all three major cable news networks give an hours worth of live coverage to the other reports?
This is the report that will finally get results.
That makes it a big deal.
For the record... this is the blog that called Salsa... the number one condiment in America "underrated".
Clearly experts are among us.

You're still missing the point. The point was, the report was not the scandalous-superstar-laden document that the media was making it out to be in the days leading up to the release. Therefore, it was Overrated.
The fact that the media gave hours of coverage to information most baseball fans knew already supports my theory as well.
It's a simple formula. The Report's delivery did not live up to the hype that surrounded it. Therefore, it was Overrated.

Hossrex, I think you misunderstand the posts sometimes. You obviously are knowledgeable when it comes to statistics, so I see where you could open the floor up for debate on things. However, I think sometimes there are other points to be made beside statistical ones. For example, with the Jones post, I don't think Gov. was saying Juan Pierre was a better solution than Jones. I think he was simply making a point (and pardon me if I'm wrong Gov. Davis - I voted for you to stay in office during the the CA recall) that the Dodgers might've been wiser to spend their money elsewhere (like a third baseman) since they already have outfielders - and Pierre is too expensive to bench. So it's not a question of stats, it's a question of good decisions - which aren't always based on stats. Same with salsa - I live in Southern California, and I have salsa coming out of my ears. But to someone living in Maine, salsa might not be as big of a deal. But if someone in Maine thinks it's tasty, they may consider it underrated in their context.
The same goes for the Mitchell report: No one is denying this isn't big news. But it's nothing earth-shattering. No one read the report and went "Holy crap - baseball has a huge steroid problem!" Most people knew that. And I think that's what Daft is trying to argue. Will this report give Major League baseball the kick in the ass it needs to do something about the steroid problem? Hopefully. Were any of us shocked when we read it? No. And that's why it could be considered by some as "overrated."

Eric Gagne was using steroids during his record breaking two years.
Roger Clemens was using steroids while cementing his place in history as one of the greatest pitchers in the history of the game.
Barry Bonds was using steroids while cementing his place in history as one of the greatest hitters in the history of the game.
2002 AL MVP Miguel Tejada was using steroids.
1995 AL MVP Mo Vaughn was using steroids.
Media darling, and "come back expert" Rick Ankiel was using steroids.
Those are six pretty big names. If I'm "missing the point", and the "point" was that it wasn't the "superstar laden document" it was purported to be... I must be thinking of the wrong Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Miguel Tejada, Eric Gagne, Mo Vaughn, and Rick Ankiel.
I'm not even bothering to list guys like: Kevin Brown, Lenny Dykstra, Todd Hundley, Chuck Knoblauch, Paul LoDuca, Denny Neagle, Andy Pettitte, Brian Roberts, Troy Glaus, Gary Mathews Jr (and his mammoth Anaheim contract), and Jose Canseco (chuckle).
Thats six VERY notables, and twelve notables who were named.
Of the twelve notables, notice what you see. A whole crap load of guys who had one of two good years... led the league in one stat, and crumbled from injuries. Now we know why.
Of the six VERY notables, we're required to rethink the validities of several important records, and awards.
This, to you, is insignificant?
"the media gave hours of coverage to information most baseball fans knew already"
You realize not everyone in America is like you or I, reading sports blogs, tracking stats, or getting game updates through text message. Right? You realize not everyone in America is obsessed with baseball. Right? You realize there are people in America who follow this game through the morning box-scores while they drink their coffee before work, don't you?
This is the report for them.
Meaning...
This is the report for the NINTY-NINE PERCENT of America that follows baseball, and not for the ONE PERCENT who obsess over it like you, or I.
This is a big deal.

I may be wrong (I usually am), but I don't think anyone is disputing the fact that this isn't a 'big deal'. Of course it is. There is no doubt that it implicates some pretty big names. But a lot of people were hoping for something a bit more juicy I guess...with most of the players listed, this report seems like it would have been a lot more scandalous had it been released in 1997 instead of 2007. So sure, it's a big deal, but that doesn't mean it can't be overrated in some aspects.
I like the Rolling Stones. They put out good music and are in the eyes of most people, a 'big deal'. But that doesn't mean they're not overrated.
Enough with the salsa comments already. Perhaps I should have clarified.
Homeade salsas. Specialty salsas. Underrated.
Carlos O'Kelley's Salsa. Watered down, name brand (Tostido's) salsas, which account for salsa being the most 'popular condiment in America'. Overrated.

You're right. Babe Ruth, and Cy Young weren't on the list. Which names were you expecting? What *WOULD* have made it justified in your opinion?
The game has been much "cleaner" in the last three years of so... so expect big names from 2007 is a misguided expectation from the start. Several of these names *WERE* still be names when the steroids thing exploded, and people either stopped doing them, or became *MUCH* more careful.
And fine... I accept that if what you meant by calling this report "overrated" was that "anything" can be called "overrated", then I accept that.
And about the Salsa...
You hit the gigantic freaking nail on the head with your "tostitos salsa sucks, but accounts for the masses' salsa preference".
The Mitchell Report is for people who like Tostitos. The people who know they like something, but don't really care enough about it to research it.
Besides... I love salsa... all salsas... I'm the one who said you're better off getting a label entirely in Spanish... and honestly... Tostitos Salsa is frankly underrated by people who like salsa.
Hows *THAT* for irony.

I'm confused as to whether you are agreeing or disagreeing with me with your last comment. It may be all the * you use. Regardless, Tostitos salsa sucks any way you slice it. I refuse to acknowledge it as underrated in any way, shape or form.
I will agree with your 'The Mitchell Report is for people who like Tostidos' comment. I think.

Tostitos is salsa for the masses.
Mitchel report is the steroid reveal for the masses.
You know better salsa then tostitos. A lot of people don't.
You knew about this stuff before the Mitchel report. A lot of people didn't.
Which is more important...
Early reports that don't get press, and most people don't know about...
Or final reports that get press, and everyone hears about?
And your misspelling Tostitos. I can't handle that damn "d" anymore.

For someone who is going to comment on spelling, perhaps you shouldn't have made 2 errors in your comment.
I believe it's Mitchell - not Mitchel
Also, you said "and your misspelling Tostitos." I believe it's "and YOU'RE misspelling Tostitos."

Re: The misspelling of Tostitos. I've been drinking tonight. Literally. Accept my sincere apologies.
Well goddammit, if you're equating the Mitchel report to Tostitos salsa...then Tositos salsa is OVERRATED...thus the Mitchel report would be as well, no?

Hossrex,
You bring up an excellent point that I forgot to mention in my original post, which may have saved us a lot of time.
You ask who/what I was expecting from the report? I wanted it to be closer to the list of players that leaked out earlier in the day:
http://deadspin.com/sports/is-th...oned-
333479.php
THAT would have been groundbreaking because there not only would have been big names, but also big names we weren't already expecting.
I guess it would help if in the future, when I say something is overrated, I mention what it is overrated compared to.
If I'm reading it correctly, I do agree with your Mitchell Report/Tostitos salsa comment, although I won't chime in on the salsa argument because I do not eat much salsa.

Okay. Argument over. :) In a good way.
I hadn't seen that list. Honestly.
Thats a... impressive... list.
If I'd been expecting *that*, and I got what turned up, I would also have called this actual list over rated.
I personally had no expectation for the list other then Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi, and Rick Ankiel.
Heh... I think we can also all agree that the *VAST* majority of the names on that expected list *HAVE* used steroids. :) But heck... innocent until accused guilty... eh?

The "masses" still don't know any of those names on the Mitchell Report. My wife watches every Cubs game with me, and when I told her Roger Clemens was on the report, she asked me who he was.
Even the casual baseball viewer doesn't care. The final report was not earth shattering news. The end result is that the hype was overrated.

The point was that this was the report that made the mainstream news. Which I believe quite a few people watch.

I dunno...
I kind of agree with Hossrex here.
But I really don't think the Mitchell Report should be considered overrated OR underrated, or even rated. It is what it is; some people think it lists big names, others say it didn't meet expectations.
Salsa owns.
