I sure hope Thunder knocks the cover off the ball over in the AL. He deserves it. Did anybody see the article mentioning Z shaking Thunder's hand, and Gallagher saying he'd miss Scott Eyre, who he calls 'Dad'? Jesus, I got misty.
I will say, about Thunder, that I will miss him terribly. And I'm not being facetious. My grandfather, who died of Lou Gehrig's Disease about a year and a half ago, also was a fan of the Thunder and often asked me how he was doing. I think Chip has it right; for me it's like saying goodbye to a family member. Again.

Murton will do for us in his passing, than he would have given playing time. He helped net us a fantastic pitcher (when healthy). We should be happy. Murton helped our team from beyond.

Who will I offer my daughters to when they turn 18 now?
I'm saddened yet happy. While not in a better place, he's free to roam and grow strong.

One day, when I finally make my hajj to Wrigley Field, I will grab the hand of the nearest youngster and point to the outfield and say "There. There is where the Redheaded Messiah once played. Remember him, you little whippersnapper, for he was magic."
In the words of the Babe in the movie The Sandlot, "Heroes live forever, but Legends never die."
RIP Thunder Matt

Thunder Matt will have a good home in Oakland.
That is, until he becomes a superstar. In which case, the A's won't be able to afford him and they'll have to trade him for a bunch of prospects.
But until then, he'll have a good home in Oakland.

Thunder,
I'd like you to know that I drank my part of 6 pitchers tonight in your honor. You have not only restored everyone's faith in red headed children, but you've also given our beloved Cubs the equalzer for the Sabathia trade. May your days as an Athletic be fortuitous. Stay proud Thunder!

Sad day for us at The Shooter's Lounge, where Thunder was a favorite. God willing, he gets to play everyday in Oakland and does well. He always seemed like a guy who played the game the right way, a very unselfish player. I'm glad we got Harden (provided his arm doesn't fall off. He needs to grow that facial hair back, E-Claire!), but I'll miss Hendry's red-headed stepchild, the throw in from the Nomar deal. Long live Thunder Matt!

Ah yes, the "throw in" on the Nomar trade, yet he produced more than Nomar ever did for us. More than anything else, I may just miss his stocky legs the most.

I think Thunder would still get a ring since he played for them this year. Nomar got one from the Red Sox in 2004 for God's sakes. But wait, we're getting ahead of ourselves here. It's been 100 years after all....

Thunder Matt is no longer Murton for Certain. He has become Dwight Smith 2.0 or White Smith, if you will.
Not since Smith has a Cubs outfielder been so unfairly denied a shot at starting. In both cases, the Cubs never gave the promising hitter 600 PA in a season. In both cases, an American League All-Star on the downside of his career took away valuable playing time. In both cases, the Cubs seemed unable to separate the player from a young, underachieving, surly teammate who played center field.
I salute Matt with a Dwight Smith rap that I read in VINE LINE back in the day:
Hey, Velez, you better be fit
'Cause the Dwight is coming
And he's ready to hit

I eagerly await the day 3 years from now when all-star Matt Murton is too expensive to keep in Oakland, and Billy Beane trades him back to his home in Chicago for some prospects

Depression has set in...I miss Thunder so much. I've been drinking...a lot...I went to McDonald's this morning to get a sausage biscut. I saw a Ronald McDonald statue in the playground. I took off my Murton jersey and placed it over Ronald's shoulders. I realized then that it wasn't actually a Murton jersey - it was a Jim Riggelman t-shirt but it was the thought that counts. Then, I urinated on the slide and was asked to leave.

I too will miss thunder matt playing for the chicago cubs, on a brighter note though, he is an exceptional player and deserves more playing time. I wish him the best of luck in Oakland, and will continue to watch him!!!!!

Your obituary is so much better than my own. I am all misty eyed. Well done. Matt if you're reading this, Chicago loved you. Come back when you're batting over .300.
God bless,
Stacey
