This is a fine move. There's nothing to lose in signing Ryan to the major league minimum. We can't win anything with the current bullpen, might as well at least have another option.

And on the note of closers, what's stopping us from shipping Samardzija to the Orioles for George Sherrill? Someone get MacPhail on the phone.

The BJ Ryan move is a low risk one. If he sucks, we just DFA him and move on.

I think the goofy deal Hendry signed Samardzija to may prevent trading him, as the Orioles would more than likely not want to take on his salary. He may actually make more than the Shark but I'm too lazy to look it up right now.
