Gravatar Wow, Funk. That was a great post. I feel exactly the same way only 1998 was my baptism. I was 8 years old in 84 and 13 in 1989, thus the significance of the Cubs being in the playoffs was lost on me. In 1998, I had just finished college. My father and I went to Wrigley field for the first time that year and we saw Kerry Wood pitch. I had always liked Mark Grace, but 1998 introduced Rod Beck and Woody to me. The Cubs finished the season tied for the wildcard with San Francisco. That one game playoff remains one of the most electric games I have ever watched. The Cubs led 5-0 in the 9th, but Kevin Tapani and Terry Mulholland struggled and the Cubs called on the Shooter to shut the door. He allowed a run to score, but closed the game, sending the Cubs to the playoffs, where Atlanta swept them in three. Sitting at the bar with my father, I think that was when I became a real Cub fan. In 2003, my wife suffered through her own Cub conversion, and now here we are again. Welcome aboard Funk.

Gravatar Michale Wurtz and Jacque Jones? No wonder we lost!!

Gravatar ..I guess it is genetic..I wonder if I find the "Cub gene" if I can at least be considered for the Nobel Prize... Sorry you had the dominant gene! But wouldn't it be boring to be a Yankee fan? Just think, you're young enough to enjoy at least 50 more years as a Cub fan. I got to see a 20 strikeout game, the black cat, Bartman and of coarse Big Z's no hitter to name a few..Cubbyville is crying today, but next year, hopefully, there will be tears of joy...

Gravatar Excellent post/eulogy, Funk. I think 1998 was the first one that really hurt, but this year's abrupt ending has been the worst by far. I know this because usually it takes me 1 to 3 hours after the last out of the season to start getting pumped for next year. This season it took me damn near 2 days.

I think this year was so bad because they were so fucking good all season, which of course brings up the obvious point that if I didn't derive so much enjoyment from watching the 2008 Cubs for 161 games, I wouldn't give a shit about the final 3. I don't know, I'll take this team over, say, the 2002 Cubs any day of the week.

Well, let's keep our fingers crossed for OJ's appeal. I can't help but think he may be vital to the Cubs' success next year somehow...

Gravatar I am officially burning my Cubs Fan Card for good. How many more of these should we endure? ouch..

Gravatar because of these kinds of things, i thank god everyday for making me a yankees fan

Gravatar Great post - this one did hurt. I'm just sick when I think about how awesome this season was, and we shouldn't discount that for what happened last week, but boy it's hard.
