Gravatar The signing of Jim Edmonds just leads me to question why we ever traded Jacque Jones. 2007 Super Jock: .285. 2007 Jim Edmonds: .252 Oh sure "Jimmy Ballgame" (I just threw up a little using the nickname, sorry) had more homers, but big whup. I thought Jock was actually better in center than he was in right, certainly better than a broken down Lassie.

And what the hell about Angel Pagan? I can't believe we traded both these guys in the offseason and have to resort to signing Jim Edmonds. This just sucks. The only ballplayer I hate more than Jim Edmonds is Jeff Kent. Why don't you go get him, too, Jim? Douchenugget.

Gravatar Douchenugget. I like it.

Actually, if the Cubs were to make a change in CF, I was hoping they'd do one of two things; sign Kenny Lofton or move Fukudome to CF and promote Murton to play right.

Gravatar Maybe I like to just be different, but really...how is this a bad signing?

Sure, we all hate the guy. But if he is good enough to stick around and hit then this is a great signing. If he stinks it up (which is more than likely) it becomes very easy to release a guy only making $284K. It's a low risk move.

Gravatar So is signing Kenny Lofton or doing as IAN suggests and letting Kosuke play some center when lefties are pitching and using Murton in right. All of which comes without the pain of seeing Jim Edmonds, one of the most hated opponents in Cub history, don the blue pinstripes. I don't care what he has left in the tank. I don't even want to spend the league minimum to find out. If he were anyone else, I'd be down with this move (except Jeff Kent, who I hate more than Jim Edmonds). Call it irrational if you must, but it's more to do with the actual player rather than the move itself.

Gravatar It's sort of what JackB was getting at; there are far better options to try. There are better players to give this chance to.

Jim Edmonds is a douchenozzle and this is a ridiculous signing, no matter the risk.

Put it this way, if you had to choose to watch Lofton play for you or Edmonds, who would you choose?

This ,ight be the nail in Hendry's pathetic coffin.

Gravatar at $284K? I'd take Edmonds over Lofton. Lofton is going to be useless in the Cubs lineup b/c Soriano isn't moving from leadoff. This move lets you bat Fukudome 2nd in our regular starting lineup. Lofton doesn't give you that luxury.

Gravatar All good except Fukudome was still in the 5-hole yesterday. If we'd signed Jimmy Walker-er Kenny Lofton, we could insert him in the 2 hole behind Soriano and leave the line-up as is. At this point, Soto provides better protection to Kosuke than Edmonds can.

And I do understand your reasoning, Nick. I still think there were better options available then Edmonds and what really is the kicker for me is that we traded away two viable options for center field in the off-season who meet the criteria Jim Hendry laid down. Jacque Jones, left handed, CF capable and Angel Pagan-switch hitter, CF capable. I can understand trading one, but not both of those guys. Jones has already been DFA'd by the Tigers and probably wouldn't come back even if Jim asked. But Angel Pagan has done very well for the Mets. Losing both of those guys when Hendry knew Pie was a question mark going into the season is just unexcuseable. The fact that we really didn't get anything in return also sticks in my craw a little. I also don't really think Edmonds will be much of an improvement over Reed Johnson against lefties. So you could still send Pie down, bring up a lefty bat and just continue to use Reed Johnson every day. I also still really like IAN's notion of moving Fukudome to center on certain days and inserting Murton in right field. Murton's damn well a better hitter than Jimmy Ballgame right now as well. Sorry to go on and on, but there are just oodles of options better (and cheaper) than Jim Edmonds right now.
