In addition to all you've said, there's another reason why McCain's age is fair game: even if you believe that it hasn't seriously reduced his abilities yet, it's very likely that it will in the near future. The difference between 72 and 80 is frequently quite striking. My grandfather was as sharp at the former as he was in middle age; at the latter, his memory is so poor that he is barely able to take care of himself. It's likely enough that his age will catch up with him soon to make it a valid consideration.
