Shit yeah, you did the right thing. I've been in a couple situations kinda like yours and what you did and how you reacted is what ALL the great NCO's I've served with handled it.
You took care of yours with you, set-up and consolidated then went after the ole' man.
Text book bro.
Let this be a lesson to all you SPC's out there reading this right now. This is how you deal with something like this.
Beers on me if you're ever in Wisconsin.

I can't tell you how hard I had to force myself to breathe when I saw the subject line of the email in my inbox. I'm so glad you and your men are ok. I have a feeling that none of the IA guys that were there for that will ever let another vehicle through those gates without searching it first.
Stay safe. Many prayers on the way.

J.A., I'm sure glad you guys came out of that ok. I can't see any other way but to keep our resolve strong, to keep moving forward,to win. The altenative is unthinkable for us, and for the people of Iraq, Afghanistan, and the many other places where the W.O.T. is being fought. Give your troops our thanks, and keep up the great work!

WTG big sarge, they don't get any easier but the do get to be more routine. Keep taking care of yours and remember that getting hit is like watching a ripple in a pond. The splash is the initial event, first you make sure you don't have any extra holes, then you check on your joes, then you ensure that you can employ your squad to either close or disengage. After that first eternal 10 seconds things kind of compress and expand.
Glad things worked out for you.

Ya'll never stop amazing me. Jeeez Louise.
I read this story and then have to listen to a bunch of wussies whine about how hard their job is, and I just shake my head, cause what I really want to do is bitch-slap everyone of them.

Jack-I was at Bernstein from December 2004-October 2005 and I have been to that building many times. Was the mayor killed? He was always railing against Americans, but the officer who worked with him most often (a very sharp captain) said it was in large part an act and that he could be trusted. How about any of the IA? I might have known some of them as well. Glad to hear you guys came out of it OK.

Hi! I'm here via Kath. I can't imagine what it must be like for your family knowing you have to go through experiences like that. My eldest grand-son is saying he wants to join the army which is very worrying. I think you should be proud of the way you reacted and looked out for your men.
May God keep you and your men safe.
