The neglect of maintenance is unforgivable. Not being seasoned travellers, our train journey there was memorable. Meal service out of fiery woks, heat, cushions-on-loan, a generator sitting in the lobby, more heat, stream of itinerant traders as well as musicians. To say nothing of an array of ?BSA vintage-style motorcycles at the 'taxi' rank. What more could one ask?

Business class and executive class are generally okay, especially if you've got a window seat. Leaving Jakarta, for the best views make sure that you're on the right, assuming you're going beyond Cirebon.
The only hassles we've found on long-distance trains are the hawkers and vendors of meals and snacks who climb on board and noisily assail everyone with their wares. Most of us are trying to sleep because the journey from, say Yogya, is very l-o-n-g. Early morning wake up calls are never pleasant.
Still, I've always prefered trains to planes. It's the travelling rather than the arriving which I've always found more interesting.
