The marriage law does not state that they do have to be of the same religion, at least not in an explicit sense.
However, for a marriage to be legal it must be between two people whose respective religions allow a mixed union. Herein lies the issue, do the respective religions on one's KTP allow inter-faith marriages.
I could probably write an extended amount on the arguments, legal and otherwise, but suffice to say, as with any law there are loopholes.
Indonesia will recognize inter-faith marriages performed in foreign jurisdictions provided the marriage is legal in that jurisdiction (except same sex unions - always at least one exception to any rule, eh?)...
I can write more if you want / need me to.

My post is not a polemic against any religion. They all inherently promote peaceful relationships, as does the institution of marriage..
I'm not happy with 'Keith's' language as it runs counter to the tolerance I believe in.

I find Starting Price's comment a bit much. But then again, his comments on his comments are another world - perchance "Meth Mad" would be more appropriate?

Whilst I do accept that it is the default mechanism of most western observers of Indonesia to assume that all our problems stem from Pak Harto's tenure, I think you will nonetheless find that "Guided Democracy" was in fact the bag that his predecessor, the great Bung Karno, was into.

Of course you're right, Miko. However, I used the term in a descriptive sense.
Suharto's 'consensual' democracy with its three, just three, political parties, if Golkar can be deemed as one, was very much guided - by his strong hand.

These are those here who will marry a non-islamic man and and an islamic woman in the name of their god, which is in the spirit of the law. See those from Paramadina University.
