Gravatar Yawn.. not that hoary old "they killed the electric car" chestnut..

The bloody thing had a range of 78Km when batteries were new. It died like every other sub standard product. No range, no performance, look like crap, handled like a mangy dog on heat. In short - no one wanted it!

Of course, we could go down the wasted resources, power grid drain and all that other green destroying stuff but that would take the fun out myth wouldn't it.

Although one must agree takes no skill to drill a hole..just ask Lapindo..

Gravatar Long time, no here, O. Welcome back.
(BTW. Why don't you call your site Purple Stump, rather than Green
- which now you're obviously against, although you once weren't.

Anyway, that range of 78 km is a lot more than the average commute to work and back, or on a school run, or to the local shops ~ except for backwards - oops, sorry, I mean backwoods folk such as your good self..

As for the technology for electric cars - and it's existed for nigh on sixty years (see this post), if there was enough political will ~ there will be a way. So let's wait for those politicos, Bush, Cheney, Rice et al, beholden to the oil conglomerates to be dumped at the polls, and then see a sudden rush by those companies to inform us that they've already developed proven, economical energy technologies and hold the patents.

You're right of course about Lapindo. How many back gardens were they digging holes in?

Gravatar And where will the electricity come from to power the car? Presumably from the big oil fired, CO2 emitting power stations.

So what's the benefit?

Gravatar Ah, the presumptive Miko.

Here are a few 'ifs' for you to ponder, ones I will put in a post once I've recycled other stuff.

Bali will be the first province in the country to produce electricity using organic garbage, with zero waste. Incidentally, it's a British project which aims to produce 9.6 megawatts by 2010.

State construction company PT Wijaya Karya (WIKA) has just started building the first of nine steam power generating plants with a combined capacity of 4,806 MW.

BTW. I've just discovered that an American firm is contemplating building a geothermal plant using the heat from the Sidoarjo mudflow. Now even I am skeptical about that.

Gravatar Let's remember one of the pioneers:

Gravatar Still green J, just practical green rather than dreamy green. Fact was the electric car was and still is a lemon and it didn't sell (by the way, the 78 was under ideal test conditions wasn't it? True is the car would not get you from Pasar Raya to the airport). Unfortunately "Political will" from the left means someone else pays for it normally the taxpayer. Not really a bush lover myself but fair go Condo being dragged into "who killed the electric car' thats a long bow even for you or are you getting your causes and rants confused mate. "How many back gardens were they digging holes in." about 13000 at last count

Gravatar O.
There's an oil tanker named Condeelaza Rice. (sp?)

Gravatar Fair Dinkum? Well you learn something evey day. Rest assured The Stump is still green but have a significantly different view on the hows and whats to achieve a viable enviroment. The Australian Government just allocated 46 million dollars into research into how much cows fart and how that can be taxed without damaging the industry..huh?? We are expected to take these "experts" seriously?

Gravatar Come on, O. You and I both know that politicians are forever farting around!

Gravatar ...and Sir Clive Sinclair...?????

Gravatar Ah, Sir Clive.

He was a VERY brainy guy. Don't forget the first home computers - the ZX 80, which had as much as 500kb (or was it 50kb?) of storage capacity.

Personally, I preferred my VIC 20 which had a real keyboard.

However, I knew several of his research assistants at Cambridge Uni. because they were extremely good at Othello (aka Reversi). I knew that because they'd regularly beat me at the British Championships.

Is Sir Clive still doing stuff?

Gravatar Yes his latest brain storm is a portable folding bike with what appear to be 1cm diameter wheels. The berk.

Gravatar Hello,
Really like your blog, a lot of negative feedback about renewable energy??
For the past 15 years our family has lived off the grid (backwoods) by choice. We have no electric bill, we can grow our own food and enjoy life.
Quite a few years ago we set out to build a wind generator of our own,(didn't like the price tag of new ones) and it has turned out very well.
And for anyone following, the electric car is our only means of travel, deep cycle renewable energy batteries and a bit of persistence and we turned our home energy system into a powerful alternative to gas powered travel, using the same technology.
We don't just talk about it, we are doing something about the problems.
If you would like to talk about it drop by our website contact
Build A Wind Generator

All the best,
Les and Jane
