Gravatar yes, apparently sharia with a dash of communism has now replaced pancasila.

still proud of my country, but really, really ashamed of my government.

The Minister issued the "Letter" under Article 21 of the Telecommunications Law (No. 36/1999) which contains similar provisions to Article 27 of the recently passed not yet enacted ITE Bill.

Overkill? Yep, extreme in that the technology exists here to specifically target just the word "Fitna" or in combination with other words like "Wilders" which would effectively block the movie without completely shutting down the sites you mention.

Nevertheless, the argument I am hearing, and you know that I am no techno whiz, is that filtering slows down the system whereas a total shut off actually would seem to free up the system as some sites are completely off limits...

This makes for an interesting precedent in terms of how the current government might handle "issues" such as this. Some might argue that potentially information laws are destined to be more restrictive than they were under the new order...

Blogging, well the letter would seem to permit ISPs and NAPs to go after bloggers as well!

Gravatar In the meantime, here's a way to bypass the block:

Gravatar I use cyberindo network of Indonesia. A couple of minutes ago, I can't access YouTube, Video Google, Rapidshare, Themoviefitna.com. Now I can't access YouTube and Rapidshare, the broswer is connecting but the server is not contacted.

I hope this is not part of a censorship effort. I find this very disturbing..

Gravatar I agree, I find this very a very disturbing development. There will, however, be ways to get around what the government blocks unless they decide to pull the plug entirely. I suppose that could be done. Very sad that this was done.

Not trying to change your argument! I think it is the wrong way to go about it...and have said so here and at home on my own blog!

Interestingly, some of the comments on my blog and others are assuming that the rejection of the blocking of sites is an expat thing or at least expat driven!

However, I am pointing out to all and sundry that there are plenty more Indonesians (bloggers and others) who have concerns about this latest development...

I always have a little chuckle to myself because it seems that everything in Indonesia will always come down to expats at some point!

I often wonder if I am missing out on something because I get the distinct feeling that some people seem to think expats run Indonesia rather than the fact that we are guests here at the discretion of Indonesians...

Gravatar Avianto met the Minister yesterday.

Read his account ~ http://home.avianto.com/archives.../ commander.html ~ and ponder his words: "Welcome to the New Order 2.0."

Gravatar Yes, I was surprised when I saw Fitna. It seems pretty tame. No frothing Western hate mongering, only the words of Muslims themselves and their holy book overlaid on footage of 9/11 (which was perpetrated by Muslims). The problem is the eliding of racism, homophobia, etc. with religion into this new word Islamophobia which I completely reject. One doesn't choose one's race or sexuality. But one SHOULD be free to choose one's religion. Religion is not biology, it is a symbolic belief system and should not be above comment. A phobia implies an irrational fear (of heights, of blacks, etc.) but religious systems can be argued against and refuted on strictly rational grounds. People don't have the right NOT to be offended for their irrational beliefs. Free speech is absolute. It is actually mainly the religious who are the most 'phobic' and irrational people in this world, increasingly so as their bronze age paganism suffers hammer blow after hammer blow from the world of science.
